So - did the groundhog see his shadow? Enquiring minds want to know.
Happy Groundhog Day!

hells bells, Cher, i wont even eat hog steak, forget ground hog altogether. if it makes you happy, go for it, lol. some mudda's do have'em. :)) cheers from across the ditch, jeanne
Allegedly ... he did not... which means an early spring. I'll believe that when I experience it.
Kate in (the single digit frigid state of) MI
Apparently none of the groundhogs saw their shadows except our local one, so we will have 6 more weeks of winter.
L>So - did the groundhog see his shadow? Enquiring minds
Linda, they say our local one did too, but I would like to know how. I didn't see sun anywhere all day.
Jacquel>Apparently none of the groundhogs saw their shadows except our local
The one in Pennsylvania didn't. If he was in Idaho this morning, he would have. We've had bright sun all day - even though it isn't very warm.
The First Furry Forecaster, Shubenacadie Sam from Nova Scotia, did not see his shadow this morning. :) Hoping he's right!

I heard a ground hog tracker spotted a bunch of them sunning in Miami.
Back when I was a kid in Ohio, my 4th grade teacher explained Groundhog Day this way -- if the groundhog sees his shadow, we can expect 6 more weeks of winter; if not, 40 more days. An early spring, then, is 2 days sooner than 6 weeks of winter. In any case, since the official start of spring is generally March 21/22, both predictions are wrong.
Punxatawnie Phil in Pennsylvania reportedly did not see his shadow. However, here in southern Minnesota any groundhogs brave enough to stick his nose out in this frigid weather surely saw his shadow, since it was a bright, sunny day. We have some rather fresh snow on the ground, so there would have definitely been a shadow. The high temperature here today was about 5 degrees above zero (F). Tomorrow's high is predicted to be about 3 degrees below zero.

Julia, I don't have any suggestions but you are going to have to do something about your weather. We've been hosting your robins about as long as we can. They've eaten everything but the plastic snake in the apple orchard, and are looking rather intently at the gators. Polly

Haven't checked the morning paper yet, but since it was bright and sunny here yesterday (and cold!), I'm guessing our local weather pundit did see his shadow. OTH, big spread in yesterday's paper about groundhogs, and the zookeeper was quoted the zoo's groundhog was up and about and marking his territory, probably in preparation for spring.
Maureen, in Central IL where it is freezing cold, definitely feels like winter is never going to end.
What's this about Global Warming? Haven't the scientists figured out that we are still coming OUT of the last Ice Age? Beginning to wonder if this is just a ploy for them to 'keep' the money bags open to them. Been thru enuf COLD winters to know things don't change that much---even had some heavy freezes HERE in the dessert. Our poor citrus trees have had it. Sure glad I didn't put the garden in yet.
Up here in Maine, it was overcast all day! We jokingly hope that he DOES see his shadow and that we will ONLY have 6 more weeks of winter!! March is usually a winter month up here, but I'm not sure this year with all the global warming! We've only had a total of less than 10" of snow so far - 4" of it came overnight last night and by midmorning the sun was out! We hit record highs in Dec. and early Jan., and then the bottom fell out with record low temps! Hey, I'll vote for an early spring! ME-Judy
I heard on the news yesterday that we have had the warmest January since 1916 - don't recall if they meant Scotland or the UK as a whole. However, I do know that walking around in a sweatshirt in January and February isn't usual for this area. I've been here for 10 years.. usually it's snow and ice at this time, and colder than in December... but no longer. We got a tiny dusting of snow about 2 weeks ago and it lasted a few hours. (Enough for my friend's triplets to see what snow is!)

I used to wear a thick fleecy sheepskin coat all winter but its been packed away for about 5 or 6 years. Now its just a light wool jacket unbuttoned - and I'm someone who really feels the cold. Out gardening in the sunshine with just a sweatshirt on, and things that shouldn't flower until March or April are flowering away. We did have more rain in January than usual so hopefully that will ease the water situation in the summer which the forecasters say will be very hot again.
And snow? we did see a couple of flakes for about 5 minutes here, but not enough for the little cats to experience it (I always love the first time animals see snow and ice and do a 'Bambi'!
they conveniently forget that bit and as all they spout is global warming this and global warming that most people don't even know about it.
I will gladly send weather your way. -9 degrees and a wind chill of
-29. That should make it feel like winter & I have no problem sharing.
Michele (from the frozen tundra-Wisconsin)
It's 8am and -8 degrees here in Iowa, no clue what the wind chill is....it doesn't matter. BRRRRRR Good day to sew, well maybe not....my sewing room is in the basement....maybe I'll just watch the Puppy Bowl and Super Bowl today. And nurse my cold.....can't talk to anyone because I don't have a voice!!! KJ
Here in southern Minnesota it's -11 at 9:45 am. Wind chill is -26. Guess I'll stay put. DH will be watching football, and I'll probably be sewing.
