OT how do I fight back?

Get the name of the firm that the money is owed to -- in our own case, we had a persistent idiot who was undoubtedly a contract bill collector, but calling on behalf of a bank. So I called the bank and asked for the address at which they accepted legal service, which quickly got me to the CEO's secretary. Explained I wanted the address because I was going to get a court injunction against them to stop the harassment, as I was certainly not party to the debt and didn't know the debtor. Wow, did things happen then! She asked me to send her a letter stating I wasn't the debtor and didn't know him, and told me that she would put a stop to it immediately, and gave me her direct phone number if I ever heard another word about it. It's been several years and I haven't heard another word.

Piglet, Wells Fargo is the bank we've been having our problem with, too. Their collection agency is relentless -- and usually obnoxious. :(

I hear you!

My phone number belonged to people variously named Mercado or Miller. In addition to numerous collection agency calls (which I learned to reply to saying, "This is no longer the Mercados' telephone number), they had a special needs child named Frankie. How do I know? For more than I year I got phone messages from Frankie's bus driver (the famous "short bus") saying that the route would be different, or the pickup time would be delayed, or something. Never a return phone number. Apparently for a while Frankie went to an out-of-district school some distance away. Once I got a call from the wheelchair company saying that the new chair was ready -- that one left a return phone number, so I called and said I didn't know where the Mercado/ Millers could be reached.

I finally got a call from the school counselor (Frankie was h.s. age by then), with a name and number. I called and explained, and didn't get any more school-related calls again.

On occasion I get the collection calls ("This is a matter of personal interest. Reference #____. Call now." I have called, and when they ask my name, I hang up.)

If I had a special needs child I would certainly be sure the school personnel had my correct phone number!

I'm sorry, Nightmist. I didn't realize you had already found them. That's what I get for posting before reading. In real life I also speak before I think.

I woke up this morning thinking it was Monday morning. I thought it was Monday morning until almost noon.

Oh, well, I got the quarterly taxes done for our company. The bad thing is that this week will have 2 Mondays in it. At least I work at home so no one saw I've lost my marbles. This is becoming a real problem. On Wednesday morning, I took 2 showers a couple of hours apart. I remembered I took the first one as I was lathering up my hair in the second one.

Senility doesn't run in our family. I am the first. And I think my kid gave it to me.

I did this!!! On my answering machine message!! Our # was similar to a pizza place. I tried giving the real # out but that didn't work too well (so i started taking the orders) we now have only cells & the only miss that we made was having the landline # transfered to DH phone but they are both in the do not call list........so far so good!!

Nononono!

I mean really do smack me on the nose! I messed up, and had I been more specific I could have sent Polly hareing off on the wrong track. As it is I might have caused confusion. There is another company exactly as I described, only they probably have nothing to do with the whole thing. I really did get the wrong place by dropping the "s" on the end of people in the url. I had the right guys in the complaints forums, but missing that pesky S sent me to the wrong place when I searched the company. My last stop on the way there I ended up with an interforum link that I had to type in by hand because it just bounced me around the various complaints postings every time I tried to copy the web addy.

I guess you just couldn't see me rolling my eyes, smacking my forehead, and going "grargh!" when I posted previously. :)

Hey, no problem. I am very grateful for the help. I used one of the little words that lawyers are so fond of - may. Their name may be Speedy Beauty Shop and Taxidermy for all I know or care. If the AGs will do anything, we can expect they have access to how to trace a phone number. I sincerely do appreciate your help. Polly

Call the police. In some states, bill collectors are not allowed to harass people.
