OT: If I go to London....

Sorry to read that those lovely shops are no longer there. Still the day would not have been a waste had there been not one bit of shopping at all. The weather that day was overcast and my photos were terrfic due to the cloudiness. The Roman Baths were incredible. Linda in Tx

Howdy!

Love to hear from you Brits on what to see, how to see, how to get there, and where the fabric is.

A good American view > Remember, although we look a little island on the map it takes a long

Look for some of the UK budget airline sites (BMIBaby, Virgin, Easyjet, Ryanair) - if you book far enough in advance it can be very cheap to get to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Ryanair are the only cheap option to Ireland that I know of (horrible people to deal with but the price is right). Flight time from the London aiports to Edinburgh/Glasgow is a bit over an hour - to which you add half an hour from the Scottish airports into town, and anything up to two hours at the London end, plus interminable waiting around. The London-Edinburgh train is usually a bit quicker from centre to centre and much less hassle, though more expensive.

The Skenes were all over eastern Scotland, one of their big houses was Hallyards right next to Edinburgh airport (best known to me as the source for the Skene Manuscript of Scottish lute music from the early

17th century; there are tunes from a later music manuscript by one of the Aberdeenshire Skenes on my website). They still own a big building firm.

Yes they do! We saw some just the other week, when I met a newsgroup friend, and we went there. Not anything like as much as before, but they do have some.

Yes... Drool!

It wasn't the manual transmission that bothered me; it was having to shift with the "wrong" hand. Got the window crank a few times trying to change gears.

Yes, and fairly easily, too, by the standards of most of the US. Getting to some of the smaller villages by public transit is more of a challenge, but you can usually get within walking distance easily. Getting to Bath from London is pretty straightforward.
