OT: Must See Historical Jeopardy Shows

Next week on 14, 15 & 16 Feb (that's MTW) there will be a stupendous Literally earth-moving historical Jeopardy. For the first time ever one of the contestants will be a COMPUTER!!! Named Wilson, no less :-). Now, I'm not a game show person, nor am I a computer techy type but DH and I were watching a NOVA episode about IMB programming a computer to answer the sorts of "non-questions" that Jeopardy uses. NOT an easy thing to do. Anyway, after four years of work and many, many sessions of playing Jeopardy with Wilson and IBM employees, the computer is ready for it's TV debut. I'm not sure what all they will talk about on Jeopardy but I am sure some of the background and the truly ground-breaking progress made by IBM will be covered. The NOVA show was totally engrossing. It was really impressive computer programming, etc. They talked about "machine learning" -- I

*think* that's the proper term -- where the computer compares what it "knows" to new problems and is able to sort of extrapolate and come to a correct decision, answer or whatever. Regardless, I think it's worth watching the three days of Jeopardy, even for those of us who are not game show OR tech sorts. This IS an historical event -- to see a computer use it's brain to answer the convulated, non-questions required on Jeopardy. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

There was an article in our local paper several weeks ago about the show, and I also read something about it in a magazine. This show was done several weeks ago. They didn't give the outcome, but did give lots of info on it. I like game shows. DH and I watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune almost every day.

The other two contestants -- both men -- are the two top winners. One man has won the most money and the other had the longest winning streak. They did a 10 minute "practice" run -- sort of a rehearsal before they started the regular game. In the NOVA show, we didn't get to see any of the practice contest so we have no idea how well Wilson will do. It'll be pretty good if "he's" learned from his past "contests"! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Minor correction: The computer's name is Watson, not Wilson. It's an IBM computer so I'm sure it's named for the founders of IBM.

Jim and I watch Jeopardy every day, and DVR it when we are not home! Some days I win!

We saw the same NOVA. I was so impressed. We're definitely going to try and watch the Jeopardy competition.

When I don't think I'm awake enough to quilt or that there is not enough time in the evening, I put on Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and suddenly get awake and get sewing done!! And sometimes I sew past that hour! Weird!

My son and I watched the first night tonight. Son never watches Jeopardy, but was totally engrossed tonight. Was really interesting to watch.

Jeopardy came on the channel that was on my tv and I started watching out of curiosity. Gee, it seems rather boring with the computer answering virtually every question. I understand the significance of the computer having these skills, but....

I'm changing the channel now- halfway thru the program. Ho-hum.

But Leslie, when Watson answers incorrectly, it is absolutely hilarious because "his" answers are sooooooooo wrong -- like not even anywhere in the ballpark, wrong -- LOL! Watson does NOT get all of the answers correct but "he's" probably getting at least 90% correct. Last night there were several questions that he had absolutely no clue about. What's interesting is that they include some film of the interviews done with the people who developed the computer. That's interesting for me and I'm not any where near being a computer techy. Sorry you and some others didn't enjoy the show but it IS rather an historic occurrence!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<
