OT: Nuke Plant in Japan

The nuclear plant in Japan that lost its cooling plant has reached

1,000 times the normal levels of radiation. I have no idea how far reaching the results would be of that magnitude of nuclear explosion, but something tells me that air and ocean currents would be carrying radiation a long way. And the poor folks of that region, I read that 200 or 300 bodies were found floating near one marina after the tsunami. And thousands of more...who knows? This is horrible. Does it presage something similar for the Western coast of the U.S.? Scary.

Sunny praying and hoping all of us are praying too

As I watch today I think that you just can only be so prepared for natural disasters. Japan is a lot more ready and tecnologically advanced for earthquake safety and look at the nightmare. My heart goes out to these people. I don't doubt that something bad could happen in the US. All we can do is be prepared. They tell us to be ready for no help to reach us for

As a correction there has been no 'nuclear explosion' nor will there be one. A nuclear reactor is not of the 'bomb' type. The explosion was caused by hydrogen which may have been the result of the over heating reactor core coupled with a leakage (no doubt) from the hydrogen cooled generators.

The problem is one of containing leakage from the damaged reactors within the containment.

It appears that these reactors are of the Boiling Water (BWR)' type and not of the Pressurized water(PWR) type. Boiling water reactors are very old and no longer build because of the potential control difficulties if anything should go 'wrong' PWR reactors are far safer than BWRs

A friend of mine in Tokyo is saying that there the immediate concern is food supply - supermarkets are not being resupplied and food is running out. Housing in general is very small, so despite the risk of earthquakes, stockpiling food is not done much. The fuel refineries (or the big ones) are off-line, and so there is no fuel to truck supplies around. I don't know that this is really being monitored/handled, but really Japan could use help right now on food/fuel too.
