OT: Please keep your fingers crossed for me

Every year as the State goes through it's budget process, we hear rumors that there will be layoffs because no money, no increases, you name.

Last year we spent half the summer wondering whether there would be a budget at all.

For the last couple weeks, the worries have started up again. David has been saying "It's like this every year. Every year it gets worked out and people get paid. You shouldn't worry."

Last night I got home and David told me "It's time to worry." When even the lobbyist agree there isn't going to be enough money to go around....

Well, now I am seriously worried. I looked in my closet last night, I've been with the State so long I don't even have a summer weight suit any more if I have to look for a new job. GAACCKK!!

Please keep your fingers crossed and hope I come through this mess with a job still.

Maureen, most of the time I do like my job.

Fingers crossed for you, I know just what you are going through.

I help out at the local school teaching English p/t, but it pays for treats and I get cheaper campervan insurance because I work for the government, about 1/3 cheaper.

This time every year, can you work for us next year? Yes. What hours? so I tell them. Then we wait, the school want me, I enjoy the job, but then it is down to the local government and the inspector for schools and by the time they've argued over budgets, instead of starting in September, I'm lucky to start by November and miss out on 8 weeks of teaching, which never gets caught up with. The children can only take in so much a week.

So, fingers crossed and best wishes flying your way...seems to be the way of the World at the moment. I'm also keeping fingers crossed for myself, because although it is only a little job, I get so much pleasure from it.

Best of luck, Maureen -- I hope you won't be forced to look for something new.

I don't think my job in its entirety is in jeopardy, but there is talk between the union and the Court for the mandatory furloughs coming up. As of 1 July our processing units will close an hour earlier each day, and there is an Assembly bill up trying to get a mandatory one day a month complete court closing [this would extend the last day for trials for criminals by one day]. Plus a pay cut across the board.

Making do on less.

Oh Maureen how stressful! Keeping my fingers and toes crossed that it's not as bad as everybody thinks and you'll keep your job.

I work for the State too (albeit a different one). We are in the same spot, RIFs all around. This is the worst I've ever seen it (23 years). So many services gone, education money being whacked. Scary times.

But, if I get RIF'd, I have enough fabric to sew until I die.

Hang in there,

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, too. I really hate the waiting game, don't you?

At this point if I come out of this with just a 4-day work week or furlough days, I'll be very happy. I'm the 2nd least senior person in my unit, so I know if it comes down to layoffs, I'm probably out of a job.

Like you I have more than enough stash to keep me busy if I lose my job. That is a bright spot. The latest numbers being talked about this morning are 8,000 layoffs. That's half the State workforce, so yeah, I agree, this is definitely the worst it's ever been.

When speaking to my sister last night, I relayed the same info to her. Fabric and yarn - yep, I got 'em.

It scares me about my medical coverage. I pay 100% of the premium, but on a layoff there would only be a certain amount of time that the coverage would extend, then I would be uninsurable due to lupus and melanoma.
