OT: Polly and Kate re I- travel

We will be traveling from Houston to St. Simons Island off the Georgia coast the end of July. Will eastbound I-10 be an okay transportation corridor? We are planning on I-12 from Baton Rouge to Slidell and then I-10 on east through Mississippi and Alabama.

Hey Elspeth:

If you leave home about sunup you will be getting into this area about sundown. When I-12 turns back into I-10 you will run to construction and the same for Exit 20 in Mississippi. Exit 49 is a big interchange with lots of traffic.

Be sure and gas up before you get into the Slidell La area. The crime wave from New Orleans has moved into Slidell according to the news on TV.

Big trucks might still be hauling storm debris and stuff flies off them so be aware.

After exit 49 the only problem you might have is a bridge on I-10 that was almost taken out by the storm. It was down to two lanes. I went to Florida in April and left about 6 am. The traffic was flowing smoothly though.

Motels might not be open and operating so I'd call ahead if you plan on staying the night in Mississippi. The farther east you go after Gulfport the easier it will be to find a motel open, gas and someplace to eat after dark. Once you get into Alabama you should have no problems.

One other thing, its hurricane season so plan accordingly, maybe a northern route like I-20. When a storm is approaching you don't want to be anywhere near I-10 and I-12.

Have a safe trip and be aware you might run into forest fires along I-10 in Mississippi. A couple of them have shut down the interstate. Wave as you go through Mississippi, I will be the one with the yellow boa as you enter the state and Polly will be walking the gators on a leash as you are leaving.

I am not aware of any problems other than heavy traffic unless the gators take a notion to meander across the interstate. However, I yield to the expertise of Kate and Pat. Good advice from both. Polly
