OT: Prayer Request

I haven't posted about this before, because I often feel like all I do is complain to y'all, but now I really need prayers. Also, I was trying not to get too excited too soon.

My oldest grand-daughter is expecting her first child in May. We know it's a boy, and this will be my 1st great-grandchild!! Yay. Early ultrasounds revealed a hole in the baby's heart, but subsequent ones show it healing itself, so that's the good news. The bad news is that yesterday, her DH was diagnosed with menengitis. I don't know if it's viral or bacterial, but I do know that either way, if she gets it it can be passed on to the baby and cause any number of horrific effects. Please pray that she doesn't get it, so that my great-grandson can be born healthy. He's due in May, and will be named Ethan Curtis. Thanks bunches to all of you for being my friend, I don't know what I would do without you.

TerriLee, I don't think I've heard much about menengitis since our children were small. Have they made any advancement in the treatment/cure? Holding you close in my heart and up in our prayers, Polly

Thanks, Polly!!! Re: treatment - it depends. If it's bacterial, antibiotics are available. If it's viral, all we can do is hope he's strong enough to beat the virus.

Terri, I was also born with a hole in my heart. I found out during a trans echo in 2003. I intended on fixing it last year but cancer hit me. If they can fix the hole early on ...let the surgeon do it. . I always felt "out of breath" and never really enjoyed sports. My parents never knew of the hole.... Patent Foramen Ovale. My prayers are with the baby's father as well. I'm sure the obgyn will watch but tell Grand-daughter to get a pediatric cardiac surgeon for the new baby. I will close mine but I am still weak from the chemo. They would go through the groin and seal it. Hugs and prayers are sent your way. Pami

Oh my TerriLee. Hugs and prayers for everyone. Having been born with a hole in my heart myself, I understand your concerns. The good thing is, if for some reason the hole doesn't close completely, it's a pretty common procedure to repair it nowadays. When I had the repair done, it was still experimental in children. This June I will celebrate the 38th anniversary of that surgery. Not too shabby for something that was experimental huh? And we all know how much medical technology has improved since 1969. Hugs and prayers are on the way for a quick recovery for your DSIL too.

Thanks, Mika. You're the 2nd person to tell me that they had a hole in their heart when they were born!! I had no idea it was so common. My DGD has already seen a neonatal cardiologist, and has an appointment for after the baby is born, to have him checked out. The original concern, because the hole was large, was that the birth process would be too stressful, but now the docs are saying they should be OK for that. Now if we can just get past this latest trial, we'll be OK, too. :-)
