OT: Serious packing

I'm getting down to the last couple of days before we head south. Trying to decide which quilt books to take, files to copy, fabric to pack etc. Last year I left half of my thread collection behind! I am taking 7 quilt tops of various sizes to quilt, plus 3 or 4 homemade quilt kits, etc. I am also taking my collection of black and white prints, so I can participate in a swap with my guild in Kingston. Of course, I am packing some favourite food items not available in the US, which makes up for the ones I bring back to Canada when I return in the spring! I'll be out of touch for a few days, until we get the computer up and running. Don't have too much fun without me!

I know you're busy but if you can toss in a few more minutes here - I am most curious. What food items do you take to FL and what do you bring back? Polly

I bring flour for bread - haven't found any that works as well, even when we lived in FL full time, I brought flour south after each trip. I also take my favourite brand of pork and beans - you love the things you grow up with! I take a pound package of yeast - available at the bulk food store, as well as some oat bran and candied fruit for DH's favourite raisin fruit bread. Canadian maple syrup - can't think of anything else. Returning from Florida, I bring smoked sausage, Jimmy Dean sausage (I use it in stuffing for the turkey), pepperoni for my pizzas (the type for sale here is much wetter), Rotel tomatoes, Cajun trail mix, butter,(that I buy and freeze when it is on sale.) We travel with a cooler, and things stay quite cold/frozen during the trip, especially since we don't open it. We used to bring some apples, but since 9/11 they have expanded the list of things that you shouldn't carry across the border.

Thanks. DH has been planning a couple of short side trips, so I'm looking forward to the journey. We try to see something new each trip, but after so many years travelling the same route, it is becoming more difficult! Do plan to stop at MaryJo's Fabrics in Gastonia......

Susan, the NC apples are very good! So are the ones in SC, so when you stop at Mary Jo's, just ask the clerk where the nearest apple barn is! Then when you get to Florida and are at Leesburg (10 miles from me) just come on by Eustis and you can just store some of your quilts with me. I won't mind! I am a little more than an hour from Zefferhills Barbara in Eustis, FL

Howdy!

Oh, very good, Barbara. As Queen of the Beggars I give this one an "A". Just slipped it in there, right between the apples and a friendly invite to visit. ;-D

Have a good trip, Susan! Vaya con Dios.

Thanks Sandy. I've been reading and really learning how to be a good beggar from this group.! Also, I have lots of extra 1/2 spools of thread to trade and also fabric scraps. So a trade (of sorts) isn't a real out-and-out beg! Yeah, sure it isn't! Barbara in Eustis, FL land of hurricanes and killer tornadoes, and alligators & eagles & owls & bears and .....

Susan: If you come down I95 you could swing by SE Virginia and see me ... that would be new! A note about Mary Jo's ... the store is closed on Sunday. I discovered that the hard way! After you leave MJ, and enter South Carolina, keep you eye open for the peach stands right along the interstate. The Peach Salsa is fabulous! I think the stands are Abbot or a similar name. have a great trip. Pat in Virginia
