OT: Update on Vacuum Cleaner - Leslie and your fur babies...

Sweet Leslie..... per your advice, I went to Home Depot tonight and bought the Dyson "Animal". What a magnificent machine!!! After I put it together, I had to try it out immediately (of course) and I was absolutely horrified at what came out of my supposedly "clean" carpet - holy cow!! What an incredible difference between the Dyson and my Hoover!

Oddly enough, I'm moving all of my furniture downstairs to various, assorted, "other" places in my house this weekend, preparing for a new ceiling remodel that will begin next week. I think once all the furniture is out, I'm going to attack the carpet, show no mercy, and see just what this Dyson can do. I'm thinking I'm going to be completely grossed out!

Thanks for your help / research on this machine - I love it already.

Whew! I would be terribly worried if you had been disappointed. VBG I'm glad you like it.... I go thru that grossed-out feeling every time I use my Animal. But it's a *good* grossed-out! What's going on with your ceiling???

Patti,

I brought a Dyson "Animal" in September 2006, I love it. We have a small dog and a cat, it's unbelievable how much animal hair it picks up. You are going to appreciate your purchase.

Jeanne Tsk, tsk.... I DO think the vacuum is extraordinary, but..... not to the point where I want to vacuum the planet! Thanks for thinking of me though :->

My ceiling. I have been in my house almost 3 years, and it's time to "complete" the downstairs. When I moved in, the downstairs was only 80% finished, as it has no ceiling. My "ceiling" is the floor joists for the upstairs, support beams and the duct work for my furnace. Not anymore!! I've hired a contractor and he'll begin to put in a "real" ceiling next week. It's going to be quite beautiful. I'm having 5 overhead lights put in, plus a fluorescent light in the laundry room (which currently is a bare bulb), plus, he's going to wrap the duct work, the support beams, and even wrap the enormous vertical support beam and round the edges on it, so it's not so "square". I'm having dimmer switches put in too. Also, since this house was built in 1952, there is all kinds of wiring that no longer functions and he's going to sort that all out, rip out what's not needed, and then hide the stuff that I do need, so I don't have to look at exposed wiring anymore either. I'm having a slight texture put on it, and then I'll do the painting. I'm so excited! It's going to make a HUGE difference in how my downstairs looks - and feels. Then, right on the heels of that, around mid-March or so, my other contractor can finally begin work on the two damaged roofs I have from that horrifying wind storm we had in December. I'm getting complete new roofs on my deck and my carport. So.... for the next month or so, it's going to be construction central around here. But not to worry - I have a wonderful vacuum to keep everything clean :->

Patti, I bought one of the Dyson Animals last weekend after reading the discussions here. I had just vacuumed my house the night before with my Riccar vacuum and, like you, I was amazed at what came out of my "clean" carpet!! I love it!!!

I just love the amount of information I get here..... no matter what the topic. I asked about rolling pins a while ago, and got some great info on those, so I figured this was the place to come for vacuum advice. Because of this group, I've found wonderful thread, fabulous hand sewing needles, deals on fabric, made some great friends and SO much more! The Dyson is a truly amazing machine. I had to take a big, deep breath when I paid for it - but what a difference in "clean".

I know what you mean about the $$$--I got mine at Lowe's with "No interest, No Finance Charge for 12 months" so couldn't pass it up since my vacuum was just about to give up the ghost!! And I agree with you--this group always has the answers to whatever it is you're wondering about. : > )

Hi Patti,

One word of caution about the vacuum and construction work. They say a Dyson will "never lose suction - ever". Well, I've found one way to do it. :-) We replaced our floor coverings so I was vacuuming "raw" concrete floors before we put down the new flooring. After a while, that vac was picking up nothing. The only way I know of to block a Dyson is to TOTALLY coat the filter pad with cement dust. And I mean totally. When I took it out, it was grey. I discovered it was actually a lovely bright blue colour. Not a big drama as a good wash and 24 hours later it was sucking as well as ever. So, assuming yours has a similar filter, just be careful about clogging the thing up. :-)
