Leslie, what kind of permanent glue do you use for your velcro on your bags? That would be so much neater than sewing it on. However, I can get into a real mess with glue--most of the time it and I don't get along.

I use a permanent fabric glue called Liquid Stitch that I buy at Wal-Mart. There are several other brand names available. Just be sure it's permanent and washable and intended for use on fabric. The fabric must be pre-washed..... and I do not use fabric softener- just in case.

I squeeze a dab on the center of the Velcro piece and use the nozzle of the glue tube to spread it. A thin layer will do the trick. The Velcro is stiff enough that you can hold the edges between two fingers. I set an acrylic ruler along the place I want to put the Velcro and a straight pin at a right angle to the ruler and set one side of the glue-y Velcro against the ruler and butted up against the pin then lower it onto the fabric. You can also put the glue on the fabric and then place the Velcro on top of it. A little glue goes a long ways, so don't overdo it. The glue cleans up with water before it sets up.

There is a new velcro product that is ironed on. The package even says it becomes a stronger bond when washed. Go figure. I've used it on a purse and did a lot of yanking to see if I could loosen it...so far I can't.

Yeah. I bought some of that iron-on Velcro, but I have quilted flaps for closures on my handbags and didn't want to heat the flap that hot to get the heat thru all the fabric and Warm & Natural layers (it must be ironed from the back side of the Velcro- not the front), so I use the regular Velcro and glue it down. It also avoids having the stitches show- if it were sewn- and I've had troubles with the Velcro backing shattering from the needle punctures. Call me lazy... I *like* using permanent fabric glue for many things... like attaching 3D appliques. Plus the regular Velcro is much cheaper than the fusible. And I'm using a LOT of Velcro right now!
