OT We have Hot Water

The sparky came and sorted out things a bit, shifting the stuff that didn't work off the power circuit that was out to one that did work. A few minutes after everything was swapped another bloke came and replaced the fuse in the transformer, which is still working, apparently it blow due to some wet fuse boxes on houses shorting out - they just needed extra time to dry out.

So last night, after 8:30pm, we had lights and the hot water tank was heating water - finally had hot showers at home!

How wonderful. There's just nothing like having hot water. After Katrina, we had to go without our hot water heater for 3 weeks. We learned lots during those weeks, even managed to do pizza on the grill and were about to attempt a wedding cake when the electricity was restored. Cold showers can be survived but I was always concerned about washing dishes. It's still not a survival technique I've figured out. Polly

Polly & all, We just went to a hurrican survival seminar. Sort of late since we had so many over the last three years.

Food editor for an Orlando paper was great & fun. She said you could do a great pizza on the grill by using Bobali (sp?) crusts. They also make good bagels. She buys ten or so (no refrigeration) when she hears the warnings begin. We found hot showers with no power by letting the garden hoses lay out in the sun. Have to have two since one gets so hot. We also keep a Coleman stove to dish washing. I can heat two pans of water at a time. One for wash & one for rinse. I guess I have to be extra cautious this year since I picked up a visious case of viral menengitis in January. Tood three months to recover.

Anna Belle in Palm Bay hoping for NO hurricanes this year.

Washing dishes in cold water-- in Scouts we added a bleach rinse to the chain dishpans.

I agree about hot water and showers though. However at the moment we get hot water from the cold tap most of the time. sigh. However we haven't hit 110° yet!!

how about keeping a couple of the solar showers like we use for camping. not expensive and they last for a long time if stored properly. just a black bag you fill with water, lay in the sun awhile, then hang and the water flows out the hose with shower rose on the end, easily turned off and on to conserve the amount of water as you use it, doesnt get too hot as a rule, if it seems too hot, empty some, add cold water to the right temp then use and add the other hot water back in to speed up the solar heating of the next bagful. arg, that seems fiddly but really its not. works a treat. good for washing dishes too i suppose tho i'd think a pot on the barbie alongside the dinner being cooked would work as well. fwiw, jeanne
