OT: Wind & fire woes

I just got home Tale of the numbers: We have had only 20% normal rainfall this last winter, and about 35 % normal the winter before. Humidity is at 9%. Winds are blowing 60-100 MPH, in circles, drawing embers up and depositing them sometimes miles away. In San Diego County, they have evacuated 250,000 people [yes, you read correctly]. There is only one way from here down in to Los Angeles, usually there are three or four. In Piru, about 20 miles from here they have evacuated the whole area, and have started evacuating Fillmore [to the west of that town]. Indeed, it seems like California is on fire.

The sun is an angry red when you can see it. The whole area is hushed, the smoke and sheer terror of the fire has quieted the birds, even the seagulls. The smell permeates your every location, and tightens the throat. Everyone lies low, unsure of their next move, saving energy for what may come. There is a drive already going for the firefighters, getting them water and supplies.

I just heard Big Bear has a large fire nearby. Has anyone heard from BBL [Phylis Andersen]?

G> Thanks Sandy.

Wow.....and that's a sad Wow. I can't imagine 100 mph winds not associated with a storm/tornado/hurricane. Just wind. Truly amazing. The uncertainly must be terrifying. My thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected. I hope it's over soon.

One news guy said humidity was actually 3% somewhere in the area. That is almost unheard of. There are 2 fires in the San Bernardino mountains but they are not in Big Bear. Hopefully she will let us know but from what I remember of her places the fire is west of her and should be moving away. The winds are carrying the smoke toward the ocean. You coastal folks are getting the worst all the way around.

Thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts and prayers for us. I hope I'll hear some good news from my sil tomorrow. They are asking for cell phone usage to be kept available for emergency situations. If you have family in the area you might have trouble getting ahold of them. I heard the SD evac. # is up to 300,000. That makes for a lot of chaos all around. The concern is that they just don't know how the winds will move so they are working on the side of caution.

Debbi is in Orange COunty and under a lot of smoke but she should be ok. Hopefully she will check back in. Taria

The latest fire started at 3PM, near Magic Mountain [you can google that location]. It is at 1200 acres already. They are concerned it will joing up with the fire in Piru, to the west of it.

The professional football stadium in San Diego is holding 70,000 of that 300,000. They figure with all the evacuations from Santa Barbara County south to San Diego county, there may be more than 1 million people evacuated. WOW!

The fixed wing and helicopters had to stop their water and fire retardant drops at nightfall. Oh, and the high temperature was 90 here on the coast today, expected to be higher yet tomorrow. The winds feel calmer right now.

Sending good thoughts to all of the first responders as well as home owners who are impacted by the high winds and fire.

Winds started up at 3:21AM this morning - ask me how I know. Sustained winds right now at 26MPH in my neighborhood. They are fearing three of the fires may join forces. The one fire that started yesterday is threatening near our courthouse in the East County, in Simi Valley. There are 12 major wildfires from Malibu to San Diego. More extremely low humidity, high temps and high winds expected today. We often have these wind conditions this time of year, but not to this degree.

Thank you to all of you praying for the people, the animals, the houses, the firefighters and first responders.

I just saw the map, Taria. DH's widowed aunt lives in Escondido, and I can't reach either her or MIL (in AZ) to find out if the aunt is okay.
