OT: Your help is needed - longish

During the school year, the classes have a contest to collect the Box Tops for Education emblems that appear on a lot of food and non-food products from General Mills. The class that collects the most wins a pizza party and an ice cream party from the PTA. Two runners up get ice cream parties.

We have in our school a Special Needs class with only 8 students. These students have moderate cognitive impairments (IQs in the 45 - 65 range). Every year before this, they were named as one of the runners up - in fact that is why they originally had 2 runners up instead of one. With only 8 students it is hard for them to compete with classes of 25 students.

This year, the PTA decided that it wasn't fair to the other classes and decided not to award the Special Needs class runner-up status. The children were not aware enough to really understand this and think that they forgot to put the picture up. Some of us teachers have since put their picture up also. Some of us (note: not all, which is a whole other story) have also contributed to provide the party for this class. The classroom teacher and aides were going to do it themselves, but we wanted to make a stand and let the rest of the building know how we felt.

Next year, we will be providing box tops we personally collect for this class instead of our own.

If you purchase General Mills products with the BOXTOPS for EDUCATION logo on them and don't use them to support your classes, I would appreciate it if you could send them to me. Next school year, I want this class to win! I am in the directory or email me at: witchystitcheratyahoodotcom Linda PATCHogue, NY

Gosh Linda..... I can't tell you how many of these I tear off and throw in the recycle bin! I will happily save them for you and send along every so often. Is there a specific due date or anything like that???

I have a small pile collecting in my kitchen, and as my children aren't old enough for school yet, I would be happy to post them to you periodically! Zip me an email to dbeitzell at yahoo dot com with your addy! I'll keep my eyes open for them! (Did you know that these cute little logos appear in odd places too? Not just on the tops of boxes, but on bags of frozen food too? Who wudda thunk?)

My special needs class is never in the Box Tops running either. I just don't make a big deal of it with my 8 kids -- we provide service to the school in ways other than fund raising. The PTO is generally pretty generous to us when they allocate funds from the spring silent auction (we do as a class provide some really cute item we have produced to be auctioned off and it generally is a pretty hot item), but this year we got nothing and our really big parent advocates on the PTO are moving on to high school next year so our chances for the future don't look to good either.

I think many people don't realize how underfunded special needs classes are. I hope you get a great response to your request for help.

I would love to help!! I'll start putting them in a special place right now. Will you post reminders occasionally once in a while and especially when it's time to turn them in to you at the end of the school year? BJ in GA

You are sooooo right, Dannielle. I noticed just recently that they are on something only DH opens - probably something truly awful like those totally inedible rice cakes. Would you believe he really likes them? I'll be glad to send mine to Linda too. And yes, a timely reminder is probably an excellent idea. Polly

Remember, Polly, just the logo. Do not send rice cakes ;))

Thanks to all who have offered to help. I told the teacher of this class and she is overwhelmed and excited about next year. We count several times during the year. The first count will be around Halloween and the class that's ahead gets to go first in the Halloween parade. I will post reminders about 3 weeks before that.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I will be watching for them and try to get everyone in my house to save them for you.

I personally don't have or use anything with those but I'm going to make a poster, no, a * P O S T E R *, and put it on our apartment lobby bulletin board and attach an envelope for collection. That should be able to gather some box tops for you. I'll pass along the word to my friends to also start saving. Those with the "doesn't matter, why bother" attitude need public flogging *seething & steaming*. We now have a mission to accomplish, Linda, good for you!

Ok maybe a stupid question but is there is a list somewhere that shows what products these are on?

I save mine and send to the Red Bird Mission here in Kentucky but would be happy to send to you for this need. Red Bird, the last time I checked was actually the number one submitters of them. I need a reminder to save them during the year though so I don't send them off to Red Bird. I don't often have very many because I just do not use prepared food much in my house. Cereal is about the only place I get them. We don't use the dinners they come on, I have seen them but like I said I don't use those products and also I don't buy frozen veggies very much because I cook fresh if I can get them. I am not sure just what all products they are on, I just clip them when I notice them.

But please send me your snail mail address.

We save them for our Ash's class. Don't forget that ziploc bags, scott tissue, kleenex, hefty kitchen bags and suchlike count too. Here is a product list again, sorted by type of product, for anyone who has trouble with a pdf:

Except for the odd box of cereal as a treat, we don't get hardly any of the foods either. Ziplocs, kleenex, and trash bags, those we buy, and they work too.

Linda, would you please, pretty please, give us a "heads-up" when you need them. I always save them - started back when my 25 y.o. DS was in elementary school, then for grandkids, and now I give them to Gt.nieces and nephews/ or neighbors who have kids in school. Once you start clipping them, it becomes a habit, I guess I keep mine in a ziplok bag in a drawer. So please let us know in time to mail them. ME-Judy

I think that something should be said, and a proposal made to make the challenge proportional. The highest boxtop/student ratio should win. It isn't fair for a class of 8 to compete with a class of 30-- and even kids should see that.

I agree, Pati. Years ago, we used to do similar things at the high school where I taught. The class period that was supposed to collect was always the period when I had my Advanced French students. Do you know how many students go into Advanced French in a little town like ours was? It was usually somewhere around 8-12. We couldn't begin to complete with the other classes, especially when some of the teachers contributed money from their pockets to match what the students contributed. It was very unfair, and my students resented it. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for a class of learning-challenged students.

I just really don't make a big deal of it -- if the parents know through the school newsletter that the collection is coming up, they send boxtops to me; otherwise, I just don't mention it. There are some battles that just aren't worth fighting. But all of us "special" teachers appreciate your support.
