Paducah--

Okay, I have waited, but need to ask--(really, really need to ask)(VBG and smiles and all that)

Did anyone see my quilt there?? Is my baby okay? Looking good? Or getting tired?

I really wanted to be able to go this year, but maybe another year I will have a quilt in the actual show, instead of "just" a display group.

oh darn - I didn't see it. Not too surprising since, after looking at just one row of gorgeous quilts my head had no room left to look at and/or remember more. I did manage to get to every vendor, tho'. (: Musicmaker

Howdy!

We enjoyed our tour of Paducah; all the shops downtown that open esp. for the quilters during Quilt Week in Quiltown USA (the banner downtown says that), Kerchoff Bakery (I have priorities), Hancocks of Paducah store (don't even mention their catalog dept). We looked, we shopped, we walked, we talked w/ new friends, we ate, we shopped, we drove around looking some more. Took pics of everything, including the quilters rowed up on the porch in front of Han-of-Pad. We looked, we enjoyed, we were surrounded by quilty stuff. Don't remember any specific quilt by name or maker. :-)

We stayed in southern Illinois:

place is lovely. An old farmhouse, 3 bedrooms, could sleep 8-10people w/ cots and sofas in use; only one bathroom but it's a verynice bathroom. Just up the road in Alto Pass there are 3 or 4wineries; we did our best to make ourselves at home at one,Alto Vineyard & Winery. The lady working that day was so nice;during the tasting we shared stories, she took notes of our commentson the wine , and a variety of bottles came home with us.

Down the road in Alto Pass we had lunch at the Root Beer Saloon;very good sandwiches, more visiting, and I got us a tour thru' thewood room next door, where the Saloon owner is hoarding some lovelycurly maple for musical instruments.http://www.northwestpassage2001.net/ After lunch we went east to the Owl Creek Vineyard, anothertasting and visit, while the (almost) daily rain passed over.http://www.owlcreekvineyard.com/I'm not much of a fan of wine but fell in love w/ the taste ofWhooo's Blush (got some chilling in the 'fridge now). Anothercase of mixed offerings and we were on our way back to Jonesboro/Anna,via Cobden (don't blink or you'll miss it). After another day of sight-seeing, driving up hill and down dale,we would arrive "home" to the farm house at Forest View and relax.Altho' we did not "hop in the hot tub", we could have if we wanted to.The house has all the comforts of home, has been charmingly re-modeled& re-decorated, a working kitchen (landlady supplies eggs, bacon, milk & bread) --but I was not cooking on this vacation. The box stairs are just like the ones at the old farm house where mygrandmother lived during one of her marriages: steep steps w/ a doorto shut out the downstairs life, shut in the upstairs weather. Cable tv is available so we could watch the weather reports ofmore tornados swirling thru' n.Tx.. The landlady & her familyare just up the hill (about 1/2 a block), far enough for privacy, close enough to ask for anything (we had everything). The 22 acres are only partially cleared, lots of "wildlife" and prettyscenery. Every night we heard the rain rumble in just before itpattered gently on the roof. It is a lovely place to stay, and a delightful way to spend some time away from home. The price is good, too. Other sights around southern Illinois, besides crossingthe Ohio River into Paducah: Superman is in Metropolis.Popeye is up the road in Chester. The Mississippi is a big river. The Shawnee National Forest is beautiful. Abraham Lincoln spentquite a bit of time in the area and is commemorated everywhere(one of his debates took place in Jonesboro). The people are friendly; skip the so-called bar-b-que there;not sure what that was but it wasn't bar-b-que. There areantique shops and junk shops and quilt shopsand... did I mention wineries? And just across the Ohio is Paducahw/ about a jillion quilters, none of them a stranger. ;-) Cheers! Ragmop/Sandy
