Ideas needed......

Okay... we have a yearly quilt show here in the Valley. (Actually it is the Arizona Guild show, covers most of the state, Tucson has it's own guild and show.....) Every year there is a theme for the show, and one of the categories is the theme category. For 2009 the theme is "A Symphony of Quilts". So I need some ideas for possible quilts. I thought about "Unfinished Symphony", but figure that one is just tooooo obvious.

So, if you have any ideas, preferable off the wall type ideas please let me know. There is a size limit on the quilts for this category, so that may limit some ideas.

Help me get creative on this, Please.

Thanks in advance... Pati, in Phx

This guy does paintings while listening to music and has some influenced by Messiaen's "Turangalila Symphony":

(You can find bits of Turangalila on YouTube, which helps to show you how the orchestration works, but the sound doesn't really do it; you aren't going to get those eight trombones realistically blasting through your computer speakers).

You want off the wall---I don't have any idea why this popped into my head as I read your post----all I can think of is a bug symphony. Praying mantis, lady bugs, etc. all making music. Weird!!!!!!! I have embroidery designs of a lady bug band--can you use this? Gen

This reminds me of that Disney (?)cartoon......gals on an island 'blasting musical notes' on one side to the men on the other side on another island and the 'kidlets' fall in love. Gals were 'cellos, violins', etc and the guys were 'tubas, horns', etc.

Butterfly (Thinking it was a black and white cartoon)

Hi Pati,

This would be beyond my ability, but the theme title immediately invoked a picture of a saxophone with quilts coming out of it (instead of notes). Okay, maybe that's weird, but you said to get creative. ;-)

My mind is playing the "Ride of the Valkyries" as I read this post, picturing a Viking clad female sitting down, quilting.

What if you got fabrics whose color or design started with the A through G used for musical notes -- A=Aqua; B=Blue; C=Coral; D=??; E=Ecru; F=??, G=Green. Then you pick one of the popular symphonies -- like Bethoven's Fifth -- and simply put the fabrics together in the proper musical note order? I think you would need either a border or a center panel that somehow explains the method to your madness of the colors. You'd likely need a copy of the chosen symphony with the musical notes written as A,B,C etc. You'd probably need to have lighter or darker shades of a color for the sharps and flats of the music. OY -- this is sounding just a tad tooo off the wall -- LOLOL! Well, I tried :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

These are all some wonderful ideas. Roberta, I just got Ricky's book and was thinking along some of those lines as a possibility. He, and Alex Anderson and Libby ??? will be doing a seminar here in Nov or Dec. this year. (Not sure I can go... or if there is even still room!)

Just a thought: I was thinking for you (in case something passable came into my mind!) and I realised that there is a small difference in the words, but a great difference in interpretation between 'A Symphony of Quilts' and 'A Quilt Symphony'). That thought might give you some interesting things to ponder. Hope so, as I haven't come up with anything yet - and I'm usually not bad on themes >g<

Have fun thinking - it's the best part (in my opinion >gOkay... we have a yearly quilt show here in the Valley. (Actually it is

thanks, Pat. This theme is not an easy one for me. Most of the time something comes to mind almost immediately, but this one is being a bother for some reason. Probably because I am not that familiar with symphonies in general. And you are right there is a difference in the 2 different phrasings of the theme.

All the suggestions so far are great. And they are getting me thinking a bit. Not sure what will happen with it, but I am pondering.

Keep the ideas coming.... the show isn't until March and I have some other stuff that needs doing first.........

Per the american Heritage dictionary, symphony is defined as

"Music. An extended piece in three or more movements for symphony orchestra. An instrumental passage in a vocal or choral composition. An instrumental overture or interlude, as in early opera. Music. A symphony orchestra. An orchestral concert. Harmony, especially of sound or color. Something characterized by a harmonious combination of elements. [Middle English symphonye, harmony, from Old French symphonie, from Latin symph=F4nia, from Greek sumph=F4ni=E2, from sumph=F4nos, harmonious : sun-, syn- + ph=F4n=E7, sound.]"

So, taking the last couple of definitions, dealing with harmony, perhaps doing something in two or three colors, a blending and flowing. Playing off [oooh, pun not intended but here it is!] a previous suggestion, a view from the conductor's stand of harmonious fabrics laying in readiness towards bottom of quilt, waiting for the nod from the conductor's baton, expanding vertically and intermeshed, to create a scene that floats out over everyone, on top half of your quilt.

Hullo again Pati

I've been thinking!

The classical symphony has four movements. They are linked by the key. The first movement sets the key, and the other movements are generally quite closely linked (the last movement is often the same key as the first).

You could think of 'key' as, say, the colours.

What is always different is the tempo of the four movements. First and last are usually fast, second is slower, third is often a rondo or dance rhythm - often with much repetition.

Also different is the length of each movement: first and last are longer than the middle two, but are not the same length as each other.

So: to connect with your show theme:

You could have a single quilt made up of four differently sized, distinct sections, with slight differing colours, and perhaps different scale of pattern to represent tempo?

Or:

You could have four distinct and separate panels, with the same similarities and differences as above.

Does that start you thinking in a possible direction? Hope so.

So very interesting ... ... . In message , Pati C. writes

Pati: You really don't want to miss the Ricky Tims Seminar. Try to get in on it. I went to it in Richmond, Virginia last year. VERY worthwhile, IMO.

I'm still pondering the theme. Rhapsody in Blue might call to you or perhaps Grand Canyon Suite. Just can't think of anything better than Beethoven's Fifth. How about the 1812 Overture? Polly

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons.....could be an interesting theme, not exactly off the wall. I did come up with a quilt pun........."On Point" Tchaikovsky's Ballet Suites. 'A Symphony of Suites (sweets) on Point' Candies, chocolates and toe shoes?
