Partial Seams

Thanks, Pat! You do come up with some good links! :) Partial seams seem to frighten some quilters until they discover how easy they really are.

I had heard lots of horror stories about partial seams at guild, but when I finally got the nerve to try one, it was shockingly easy.

That's exactly what I meant, Kathy -- there are far too many horror stories about partial seams, and it does seem rather silly when you consider how easy they really are!

I would think anyone from a clothing construction background wouldn't have any trouble with partial seams. I wonder if that makes some difference in our perception? TAria

Yes, they do. I think the scary thing about partial seams is that when you first look at the block, you see what looks like a Y-seam or an inset. Once somebody shows you how to so the partial seam (or you figure it out yourself), it's easy as can be.

okay... so for insets... do you

A) start from the point and work to the edge, clip, and then start from the point to the other edge B) start from one edge to the point and then pivot and continue to the other edge or C) start from one edge to the point, clip and then start from the other edge to the point

basically I am taking the current flag and setting it in the upper left corner as the standard(?) and then having plain fabric for the main part. could do that in 2 parts but it would look better as one. We'll see. Could just sew it to the background applique style... hmmmm.....

Yes. Depends on what is being set into what. IF it is something being set into a single piece, you can do #B. IF you have a seam there, you don't want to sew the seam allowances of the "outside" part down, you want to leave them free and sew only to the seam allowance corner. Whether to stitch to or from the inside corner is personal preference and may depend on the fabric and such.
