Patterns Galore

I found 12 hankies that were my grandmother's. If she were still alive today, she would now be 110 years old. I want to make the hankies into a quilt. I once saw a pattern in which the hankies are used as the skirts on Victorian women. While searching the web TRYING to find this very much wanted pattern, I came across this website. Lots and Lots of patterns (of course, not the one I want).

Kate,

Thank you so much. I have seen this one, but.... the one I am looking for you fold the hankies to make the skirts. Some of these hankies are telling me not to cut them and when they are that much older than me, I feel I need to respect my elders.

I found a Victorian lady with a hankie skirt. If this is what you are looking for maybe you can email asking at this site if they have a pattern.

I've been to this page before. Even though the woman titles it "Free Patterns," in the third paragraph she says that you can buy some of the patterns. One day (not too recently), I went through the entire list and found few free patterns.

I would make a whole cloth quilt in an antique white or perhaps a very light mottled color. I would then put the handkies on top and stitch them on. Depending on the handkie's center, you could do a design in the center of the handkie or 9 patch them leaving a blank between the handkies. Lots of places for quilting. Only problem would be sure the edges of the lace were quilted down well.

Kate -- I love this idea!! I've thought of using my collection of hankies in a quilt, but you know, I can't get over the feeling that they are too fragile. I'd have to have a foundation under each peice, but that wall hanging in a frame is a better place for them. The frame gives them the honor and respect they deserve, and they'd be away from anything that could harm them.
