Polly asked

Polly asked us to show & tell what we are stitching, so I'll go first, and I hope this works. If not I'll figure another way. This is hand piecing and has been very calming for me during this past week.

Gorgeous. I love the way the stars appear and recede; sort of like the 'real' ones. Polly

There's my "finally finished" log cabin quilt (it just took 5 years), a applique heart top (still have to quilt it) and completed a quilted purse ready for spring.

For 'regular' sewing I've made three spring/summer tops so far, have been having a lot of fun with the serger and cover stitch machine on stretchy ITY (Interlock Twist Yarn) fabric.

Hi everyone I have just finished two projects. We are in the middle of a warm summer here so I am just getting back to quilting for the year. The first photo in the link is my entry to our Guild's 2012 Challenge. Topic: Surfboard using the same size template. Total size of quilt to be exactly 24x48". I found the image in the Great American PinUp book. My husband thinks it is terrific [what man doesn't like a pin- up girl?]. Reading the book yesterday to acknowledge the original artist, I see it is Joyce Ballantyne, the artist of the original Coppertone ad in the the '50s of the girl and the puppy pulling her shorts/swimsuit. The project was great fun, and I learnt a new technique for the background out of Robbi Joy Eklow's book, Free Expression. with fused applique. Anyone else tried this? The second project was a completed in a day and a bit, a basket liner for my flat basket that I take to quilting, which is also good for transferring comestibles here and there. The pretty cupcake fabric took my eye.

I don't 'do' Facebook Di. lol

Mums op went fine.

Dad is in Rehab, still unable to walk and suffering Post Traumatic Amnesia. Better but along way to go. He is looking forward to proper food instead of pureed everything.

Baby quilt No 1 - small size all quilted and awaiting binding and the worst job (still Pat, despite your handy hints!) of tying in the thread ends. Pictures will follow when all those thread ends have disappeared.

Top for the Mum-to-be now sandwiched and awaiting quilting. When both these are done I will start on the 'big' bright baby quilt - jungle print in primary colours. I have a design from Susan Teegarden Dissmore's 'Clever Quilts Encore' chosen (Crackers) and lots of co-ordinating scraps ready, but want to be able to concentrate on it as there are lots of bits that could get mixed up with other things as well as in my brain! (I have a talent for misplacing things). I do like her Clever Quilt books for ideas on using 'panels, borders and theme prints'- she has more imagination than me!

Also I seem to be making an Olympic tote bag for the County Show WI competition. Wanted to opt out this year, but 'they' all turned to look at me when we reached discussing that category! Not easy as all the Olympic motifs are copyright. My design circumnavigates this (I hope) and isn't as time consuming as the first ideas that wizzed through my brain - I hope.

I think one of the reasons for so few volunteers for any of the categories (some branches just don't enter any more) is the negative comments (sometimes very unkind) from the judges. After all, everyone has done their best and tried their hardest. Last year some of the comments were especially cringe-making. We expect criticism but it is possible to criticize kindly and constructively isn't it.

So I will quilt it to within an inch of its life (that's what they seem to like) and smile at the comments on the colours of mid green, orange, magenta and mid blue, which I don't like either but which are the Olympic colours this year (who ever chose that combination!).

So I have plenty to keep me busy for the next couple of months. Then it will be back to the assortment of ufo's which are hiding in a cupboard, but which keep peeping out.

Oh - and I have some baby soft-toy balls to construct too - one for a friends grandchild due at the same time as ours.

Thank you, Sally. I didn't know that Susan Dissmore had another Clever Quilts book. I don't exactly 'follow' it but often I flip through her book to see what might work for whatever I'm putting together. Found a copy over at the used book store; can't wait! Polly

and have now started quilting a double bed sized quilt that has been in the UFO pile for too long.
