I'm thinking about making some little labels to use not for quilts, but for small items like wallets, pencil cases and other things that don't get washed much.
Does any of you who have experience with using fabric in the ink jet printer have any comments on durability for this kind of use?
I'd love pretty wowen labels, but here those are incredibly expensive and I'd like to add a image.

I've made lots of labels, but they're all for quilts so far. Your idea is a good one! Up until recently, my favorite brand of printable fabric was Printed Treasures, but I've just begun using some of the EQ Printables, and I like those even better. :)
I have only done quilt labels. I always use Printed Treasures. I have used EQ brand, and it is alright. Printed Treasures now has one that is soft. I have tried the freezer paper on the back of my fabric method, but I have always gotten better results with Printed Treasures or EQ.

I can't help with the printing part, but here's some free labels to print-
I have printed with my inkjet printer on regular fine cotton ( percale) by ironing it to a neatly cut A4 size freezer paper. It came out beautifully, would be suitable for something like your projects that don't get washed. HTH
You can also use Bubble Jet Set to treat the fabric--I've done that--a lot of work. I've switched to the already prepared sheets.....
