QUESTION: Shank Length

Can someone tell me what lengths are considered "long" and "short" when it comes to shank length on your sewing machine? I know this likely seems a stupid question. :)

I want to order a darning foot for freehand quilting and don't know for certain if mine is long or short? I'm not even sure where to measure...and the manual tells me nothing about it.

The machine is an older (but faithful) 30-stitch Kenmore, with quick release feet.

Thanks in advance, if you can help.

A low shank machine measures approximately 3/4-inch from the screw to the bottom of the foot. A high shank machine measures approximately 1 1/4-inch

from the Clothilde site

It's not a silly question at all. I can never remember what I have, I just recognise it when I see it.

Thank you so much! I believe mine would be a low shank then. I knew this was the place to ask. :)

Many sites (just can't remember which) will list brands of machines and what they are. Clothilde used to but they have a new site and I haven't found my way around it yet lol

Look carefully at the foot (esp the walking foot) and it should easy to see if it will fit your machine. And if in doubt, a good retailer should be able to tell you, live or on line.

Happy shopping!

Not a stupid question at all. Just something you need to know, and there is nothing wrong with asking.

Try clicking on the link below, and then compare the images on that page with the foot on your machine. It should be pretty easy to tell which one looks most like yours. Good luck with your darning foot.
