Quilt Retreat

Thanks, I go up to Mansfield to get get Malled and to go to TSWLTH. Never heard of this place though. But I have only been living in the area for 9 years. I guess I don't get out enough.

John -- where in Ohio are you? I was born and raised there! How this buckeye got to Michigan is a long story!

We have a retreat in Holmes County next month - I'm so looking forward to it! Any places we should be sure not to miss?

There are a couple of Quilt stores of Amish/Mennonite persuasion in the town of Berlin. (Pronounced burlyn). That is right in the middle of things. Virtually any town in that area has at least one quilt shop and many seem to be all quilt stores or at least tourist stores. I don't know whether you have access to a car while you are there, but you should go to the village of Kidron. What is there is Lehmans Hardware. Don't let the name scare you off. It is a destination spot with tour buses lined up to disgourge their passengers. It is a place that I find hard to leave without buying something. Just riding around the area is a great visual experience, as the largest Amish population in North America is centered there. I know people think that Pennsylvania is the headquarters, but Holmes County has the largest population by a long shot. The farms are beautifully kept and the roads are filled with horse & buggy traffic so be careful and pass them with care. If you want to learn more about the origins of this singular group of people, there is a museum and life center called "Behault". I don't know what that means in the lingua franca of the Amish, but it is worth a 1/2 hour of your time if you have any to spare. There is a 360 degree mural that tells the story of their whole journey from Switzerland and other parts of Northern Europe and their making their way to America. I love going to that part of Ohio. It is most beautiful, and you will be able to experience a unique culture that seems to have been able to prosper by rejecting all that is part of our larger cultures many modern must haves.

I forgot to tell you that I am located in the next county to the west of Holmes. Knox county. I am in the far western portion of it though. About 30-45 minutes by back roads from the center of Holmes. Fredericktown, is the name of the place. A sleepy little burg with nothing special to mention about it. Except me, of course.;>}

John, thank you for the comments about Berlin. I am going there this weekend, as a weekend getaway with three other female relatives. Two of us are recently widowed, and this is our meeting place for a weekend of laughs and rejuvenating. I rented a cabin. And we are going on one of those tours you mentioned, so I will have to look for this place- the hardware store I do believe. And for any of the rest of you out there, if you ever get a chance to make it to Holmes County in Ohio, it is a great place to visit. It is about a three hour drive for us from PA, and my sister is driving up from KY. All those small towns are just a delight, and fun to see all these things too. Karen
