Quilters are Fantastic People

Went to our quilt guild silent auction/live auction/rummage sale last night. We do this as a holiday event every year. The money raised is used to pay for our fantastic (in most cases) speakers. Well.... we also had a raffle. Let me give you some background.....

Jan is a quilt teacher who is one of our past presidents. Really neat lady who has been through breast cancer twice. In September, Jan got a call from some lady asking if Jan wanted some of her junk. Jan decided to take it and use whatever she really did not want for her quilt classes to practice. Well, in the boxes of stuff were about 50 or 60 nosegay blocks that were made in the 20's or 30's. These were real antiques, not reproductions. The nosegays were not on any kind of a background, so Jan got 50 of her nearest and dearest quilting buddies to hand applique the nosegays to a cream color background.

Helen is also a past president who manages to win one set of the monthly blocks every month. She takes them home and has them in a new quilt, quilted and bound by the meeting the next month. She then donates these quilts to holiday auction. She makes philanthropy quilts each month too. She donates a minimum of 24 quilts a year. Helen has been single forever, raised her grand-daughter was the service unit leader for GS, active in the PTA involved in everything and still donates the 24 quilts a year, makes quilts for family members and friends, etc. She is going through her second bout of cancer. Has lousy insurance.

Jan held a raffle for the nosegay quilt. All the money from the raffle was scheduled to go to Helen to help offset her cancer expenses.

Last night they drew the name of the winner of the quilt and then announced that we raised just under $6000 for Helen!!!!

I broke down crying like a baby when I heard how much was raised. Too back I was not the quilt winner or I would have posted it for everyone to see.

Auctions can be such scary things. Our newspaper reports that at an auction this week in Louisiana, the winning bid for 'lunch with the Governor' was one dollar. The least the bidder could have done would have been to offer the price of a hamburger and fries. Without trans-fat. At a safe temperature, of course. Polly

Your story brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful guild you belong to. I have just recently had a great experience with many of the members of my guild. I still consider myself a fairly new member (less than 3 years) & although I am acquainted with several members, don't feel that I know many of the members that well. I just had some health problems, which put me in the hospital for 2 weeks & am on the road to recovery now. The outpouring of help I received from so many of the members of my guild was very touching. It has really made me realize what a special group of women quilters are.
