Doesn't get much better than that, Vivien. I remember meeting you, your husband and your 2 lovely daughters almost 3 (?) years ago in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area. Keep your fingers crossed that DD #2 will follow suit.

Kia Ora,

Well, not really having worked on any quilts this year (which I intend to regard as Sabbatical rather than sloth), I am all fired up again. What got me motivated once more was DD#1 (she is 18 years old) asking if she could make a quilt.

Not quite knowing where she was coming from (she has never shown the remotest interest in the quiltmaking process, other than if she is the intended recipient) I suggested she look at the books, and she was welcome to choose any fabric she liked from the stash.

Without further ado she went to the bookshelf, chose the "Rail Fence" quilt from "Quilts, Quilts, Quilts!", chose a selection of fabrics from the stash, and has now completed a 50"x62" top and pieced backing. This has all happened in a matter of days.

This afternoon was the clincher. She and I were talking about what next, and I asked her how much time she had before her friend's birthday (this is a gift for a friend). She agreed that she just didn't have enough time for hand quilting this quilt, given her time frame and the fact that University lectures resume next week, so it will be quilted by machine. Then she added words to the effect - I know how special getting a quilt made for you is. My friend has never had a quilt made for her, and this will be so much nicer than me just going out and buying something. My friends reckon I'm really lucky to have a mother who makes quilts.

She also added that for her next quilt (her next quilt!!!) she'll leave enough time to learn to quilt by hand.

Well, I've just spent the evening looking at fabrics again, looking at photos of quilts with her, and itching to get back.

And it's good to be back here too, amongst friends.

And we're extremely glad to see you, Vivien. How lovely that you are finding out what your daughter has been thinking all these years!! Now that she's 'grown', just think of all the wonderful conversations you can have while you're quilting together. Happy days! . In article , Vivien &/or Tony writes

Vivien - sure glad to see you back on the ng.

Congrats on the new quilter in your family. If she is like my granddaughter, she will consider your stash as her personal store. It's really dangerous for DGD and I to go in a quilt shop together. But, I'm so pleased that she likes quilting, I don't complain too much!

Vivien!! You have made a mistake, your youngest can't be 18. You are barely out of nappies yourself!! LOL!! Good for her and what a complement for you. Welcome back. RedQueen
