Thanks all,
I went out and bought some 'pebble beige' and plonked the yellow back in the washer. I now have a rather doody old gold. Just the right shade. I thought is was going to go a bit green, but it's stayed just this side now it is washed and dried. The blue is probably a little pale, but it's so pretty, and DH, who's good at colours says they go well. So that's a wrap.
Tomorrow I shall iron it, stitch up the centre seams and press, and begin to draw out the pattern. I am doing it by eye with the exception of a template for the big leaf shape that recurs in various guises all over. Definitely think this quilt needs photos of all the stages.
We shall sandwich it and baste it on Monday afternoon, then it can go on the frame and 'volunteers' will start to quilt it. then, come the exhibition, it will go into the museum and be a work in progress while people go round. Those who are interested will be allowed/encouraged to have a go.
My Auntie Ciss, (for it was her, Kate, not AQ-who was Stockton/Durham needlewoman and teacher) who was a seamstress in South Wales, would be so proud.
Thanks so much for your help. I shall remember the tip about the complementary colour for tone. In fact, I remember it from watercolour techniques I used to teach, but had completely forgotten about. My forgetory is getting the upper hand these days. oh dear!

I think the BOCES is specifically a NYS program. I've never heard of it elsewhere, but my NY relatives have mentioned it. I am not even sure what the acronym means, but get the gist that it is an adult education program.
For the dye problem, I'd suggest check>

Yes, but Amy is IN NYS. :-)
Board Of Cooperative Educational Services. It's for everyone: students (special needs/vocational) adults, teachers/ administrators...)

Ya-huh. BOCES is where Ash is going to school. NY started it, but there are some other states that are looking at it and saying to themselves, Well what a good idea! Colorado has a BOCES system in place, and has since the sixties.
i've taken many courses at BOCES. Great teachers and curriculums.
Now, about fabric dyeing...www.quiltingarts.com has a wonderful link for this. i just saw a show on it today on PBS.
