recent project challenge and big goof

For Christmas I received a digital book from Amazon called the Kindle. It's about the size of an 8x10 sheet of paper and about 1/4 inch thick. It can hold a huge library of books and is going to replace, ultimately, my paper back book collection to free up some shelf space for, you guessed it, fabric! Anyhoo, I feel that I need a carrying case for it and have been tackling this project for a few weeks now. I wanted padding for protection, a lining, plus a partition in the middle so that the charge up cord could be on one side and the Kindle on the other. THAT's where my big goof occurred. Using Cathy Corcella's flat construction method, which is a remarkably easy recipe once you get the hang of it, I used some gorgeous music fabric I bought in Atlanta (isn't it funny how quilters can remember when and where they bought "that" fabric yet forget where they left their glasses?) and assembled everything as per instructions. Of course, the instructions don't deal with a partition. When I turned everything right side out and up, the partition opening was in the bottom of the purse!! I've recycled that interesting project into a smaller purse and am starting on the Kindle sized bag again. Cross your fingers! I'll post pics of both the recycled purse(s?) and the final successful bag when I get there. Notice I'm not saying "if"?

Cool! Looking forward to pics. You are so advanced. I made a case for my new camera, nothing more than a simple little pouch to keep it from getting scratched in my handbag.

The wireless is a battery drainer, so you only turn it on when you need to go onliine and find, for ex, a sequel to a free ebook you've just read and love enough to pay for the sequel, or other books by the same author. Unlike some techie gifts that turn out to be a big disappointment once you actually have them, this one is still a thrill. Only I can't read it in the bath!!!!!!!!!!!

The keyboard is also used to search for book titles... to purchase and download (or find free!) books directly to the Kindle through the wireless connection. You can use the Kindle without having a computer to download and install books to it.

There was an article on e-readers in our paper this weekend and there is a waterproof case that you can get for the kindle. So yes you CAN read it in the bath! :) Look at the pictures that go with the story - one of them shows the case:

I'm thinking an ereader would be fun for traveling - a lot lighter than the stack of books I usually take along LOL

A friend of ours got one for Christmas 2008, since then 2 of our group have bought one. SO loves his and has plugged it into his car and it reads to him as he goes to and from work, at home he reads it to himself. I guess that a lot of cars have that MP3 jack in the newer models, my 9 y.o. PT Cruiser has both a CD player and a cassette deck but no MP3 jack. We've been getting books in the MP3 format for playing in the car, we spend 6 hours going to and from DMIL's or to my son's, books make the trip easier. I don't care for the Kindle's voice.
