Retail scam (including JoAnn's)

If I remember correctly, some RCTQer's have been bitten by JoAnn Fabrics request to sign up for some preferred customer account and then getting billed monthly by them. There was a U.S. Senate committee hearing on scams like that, and JoAnn's is listed as one of the retailers involved. Read more at

Thank heavens I abandoned JoAnn's website after a couple of nightmarish battles with their "shopping cart." Clumsiness is one thing, but that sounds like consumer fraud.

Just one more reason I NEVER shop on line, NEVER put personal information on line, and NEVER do any bill-paying or banking on line. Sheesh!

I do shop online a lot. I'm such a recluse, and live in nowheresville, so if I want some things, I have to either do that or order by phone.

And being the control freak that I am, I'll be the last surviving person on Planet Earth who pays bills online.

Example: Last year we subscribed to 1 year of XM radio over the phone. We got rid of the vehicle/radio last July. I cancelled the subscription over the phone afterwards.

YESTERDAY, I opened my credit card statement to find they had sucked out $165 for another year's subscription. Without my knowledge or authorization. For a radio we no longer have, for renewal to a subscription we had cancelled.

Here's the kicker. I called and they tell me it will take FOUR WEEKS to charge back my credit card. No way! They would NOT back down on this.

Sorry for the rambling. This post struck a nerve. Not only do we need to be careful about using credit cards for services, but now I make a point to tell them NOT to keep my card on file.

Sherry, maybe you should also call the credit card people and see what they can do from their end. Barbara in Florida

We had the same problem with XM--told them to take our credit card off file!! They are real quick to charge on it but you have to go through and act of congress to get it off the bill!!

Donna, try calling the credit card company and tell them about the charge and what they told you about waiting four weeks. surely someone there will have the intelligence to remove the charge or at least mark your account so the card company doesnt then charge you interest on that unpaid amount. if you dont tell them about the stupid thing they might well add interest on that amount to your next months bill if you dont pay it. take no prisoners!!!! talk their ears off if you have to til they listen and remove that charge or at least put it into limbo for the time being. none of this is your fault and they need to understand that and help you out. let us know what happens. take no prisoners!!!! good luck, j.

We did, jeanne. Sure didn't want to pay interest on something we didn't order or want! Thanks though.
