S.E.X. today :)

The quilt on our bed is wearing out. I can't believe it, but the fabric is shredding, though I bought it at a quilt shop and thought it was good quality. :( Those of you who have seen what I normally do know that I don't usually do large quilts, but I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do it. That's the bad news. ;)

The good news is that I've wanted to do a Winding Ways quilt for some time, so now I'm going to use that pattern for our new bed quilt. I had a gift certificate to the LQS for Christmas, and it paid for not quite half of what I needed when I went on my S.E.Xpedition today. Talk about sticker shock! I'm not used to buying so much fabric for a quilt! LOL!

Anyway, I can't wash and press the fabrics yet, since the dryer is broken; I'm hoping for the final part of the repair to take place on Sunday (repairman's choice, not mine, since he has Monday's off) so we can get back to normal -- I have two loads of sheets waiting to be dried right now. :S

I surprised myself when I bought the fabrics today, though; I never thought I'd end up with the colors I finally chose. I've posted a picture of them (beautiful Modas, with the exception of one of the light fabrics) on my brand new blog. The URL is in my signature, though there's also a link to the blog on my regular site.

Well, Sandy. I went to your blog and the fabrics are just knock your socks off gorgeous. Then I went to Marcia Hohn's blocks to see what Winding Ways was. Nope. She hasn't done that block. Since we'll be traveling this journey along with you, if you please, show us where we're going. As to 'sticker shock', recently I saw a fabric that I thought was nice and it was $ 10.98 per yard. Was that 'to be expected' ? Is that where LQS fabrics have gone? Polly

Wow, Polly, I'm surprised that Marcia hasn't done it! But there's a photo of a quilt made from that pattern at -- it's even in similar colors to what mine will be. I love the circular effects in that pattern.

Yes, $10.98 is pretty close to standard; the Modas I bought today were about a dollar less. :S One more reason why I usually do smaller quilts.

Thanks, Taria. :) Did you get the same one I have? I have the Nancy Elliott MacDonald book, which has an interesting way of cutting the pieces. :)

Oh, I'm so glad you told us you have a blog! It was so fun to read and see your sewing room (again!)

I think your fabrics will work great for a winding ways quilt. I have used Nancy's book and templates and it works really well. I think I've done four of them - how crazy is that? But the pattern is fun and you can do so many patterns by changing where the colors go.

I've got you bookmarked!

Oh, what a gorgeous pattern. Do you know, I have a photo of a quilt made with this pattern (blues) in my 'patterns' drawer. The minute I saw it I loved it. It might never get done, but it is definitely on my list. Yours will look triumphant in those colours - warm and rich. Don't forget the possibility of making the pieced part in sections - one of the various ways (Julia in MN has some great instructions on her website) - and then you can put it together adding the border - quilted in the same way, before joining - at the end. Might be worth thinking about? . In message , Sandy writes

Yep, that's the book. When Leslie sent us over to the C&T sale I ordered 6 books and had dh set them back for gifts so I just got them for my bd last month. The book breaks the process down to easy steps. What fun this pattern can be with different color placement. Can't wait to see yours. I had one fabric do the shredding like your old quilt is doing. I can't remember the maker but I did send a note and a piece of the fabric asking what happened. I never got a response. Taria

Your lemon ice cream looks good - the bought ones always seem to taste synthetic.

We don't have half and half here - I wonder what I should substitute - cream? or would that curdle.

American half and half is supposed to be equivalent to british single cream.

Thanks! Life has been crazy for a very long time. Things seem to be calming down so I'm hoping to be back here often again and actually get some quilting done!

Well, you could always leave the last few corner inches to be quilted after you've made sure they will fit? I mean, cut the mitres in the finished borders after quilting? Possible? . In message , Sandy writes

I'm hoping the same thing - as far as the quilting is concerned! . In message , Marcella Peek writes

That's interesting: the fabric I can't help stroking, every time I open a drawer where one happens to be accessible, is Fossil Fern. I just love that stuff. I 'eye stroke' Fusions! . In message , Sandy writes

Thanks - when the snow goes and the shops are fully stocked with the things I want to buy (this morning they were refilling the spice section while the basics hadn't yet been unpacked!) I'll definitely give this a try.

I just love Moda fabric. It has the best "hand". They run the same $ across the country, I'm guessing. I really like Thimbleberry fabrics and Red Rooster, too.

I can't wait to see this one finished, and would love a small tutorial along the way! =)
