Schoolhouse test block

Here is the final test block for the schoolhouse quilt I am doing for one of our relatives. Actually, it is one of three quilts I am doing of the same design. one for my sister and one for another relative. Both of them are teachers, so it should please them as to subject. The third one is for myself, as I have come to love the way this block looks. My local quilty shop has a bunch of specialty fabric like the clouds, bricks for the chimney, and slate roof patterns. I love the effect. It adds a realistic touch to a one dimensional design. It will be set in 2" sashing with contrasting cornerstone blocks. The link is below, hope you like it.

looks good to me! Don't you just love the variety of "construction" fabrics out there!

I can't wait to see the finished products! I'm sure they'll be gorgeous!

It's great. I do hope you can find some fabric, printed with bells, so that you can appliqué one in the bell tower >g

Yes I do. This shop has a lot of that kind of stuff, and they try to keep it in stock. A great local (and the only) resource.

I am thinking of using Variegated thread for smoke from the chimney. The brick chimney print varies across the spectrum from gold to dark red, so each one is different. That is about all the difference I plan to do on the first one. The second one may change as the project progresses. It depends on how I like the first one, when it is finished.

Of course we like it, John! It's wonderful. Your fabric choices are just right -- no wonder you've decided to make one for yourself. :)

Love it! You could get something with kid faces to use in the windows. Roberta in D

No, Jeanne, no! I do not need another fantastic quilt idea! I so do not need to make a quilt showing schoolhouses through the year, with autumn leaves, bicycles, sleds, and other seasonal fabric. But .... now this is imprinted in my brain, and I already have a good collection of 'building' print and novelty print. So, I don't know if I should thank you, Jeanne, or whine!! LOL PAT in VA/USA

Don't whine, Pat. It's fun. I made a houses quilt for a much loved niece. Something like a hundred houses and every one of them had something delightful looking out a window. The only time it became boring was in putting on the chimneys; some had two, some, one, and after a while, some had none. Every little house was a new adventure. You'll enjoy the making of it. Her quilt was immediately approved by her QI. She doesn't quilt (yet) but her kitty is ready. Polly
