Scrappy Tumblers

At the end of this day I plan to have all 783 pieces sewn together into ONE BIG quilt top. It hasn't been easy but I have had joy in having this project to fall back on when other people's ideas of what I should be doing with my time comes up. And it's often.

In addition to this project I have my fourth book I am writing. It is on short fictional stories. Fictional in that I've changed the names of the people in the stories. I am nowworking on the story in titled The Crabby Old Lady and what she is up to. Wouldn't it be awful if I really named this "old lady?"

Don't you dare put my name in that book! hee, hee!

I also have a scrappy tumbler started. It's one of those "I think I'll take a class to learn how to do this" and you make two rows in class and maybe a half a row when you get home. And then it sits in your WIP pile staring at you. I even think I have all the tumblers cut. I am working on reorganizing my stash, WIPs, PIGS and UFO's for this year. I am finishing up my current projects and not taking on any more until I get some of my "in process" stuff done or otherwise disposed of.

I am looking forward to seeing your ONE BIG quilt top! You will inspire me!

A real live author in our midst, Amy? Hmmmmm. If you will pay careful attention, you'll just be amazed at what we have in our midst. Everything but a serial killer, methinks . . . and I'm suspicious about a few of you. Polly

I believe it was back in the thirties when Henry Ford instituted the assembly line method for making the Ford Cars which caused him to be able to put out more cars and at a cheaper price so we could all own a Ford car. Well, I was alive back then and was and am very impressed by that system. I use the scheme to lay out my tumblers. I settled on three colors: brown, green, and red. I knew in a flash I needed 3 times more lights neutral tumbler than the b,g and r. I cut and laid them out "as they go" and from then on everything falls in line. Of course, I've had to stop periodically to thread more bobbins but in principle it's ready to GO each time I have the energy to push the foot pressure thingy.

Why not try it? It worked for Henry Ford, and it works for me.

I will give that a go. When it comes to scrappy anything, I am my own worst enemy in that I try to organize the scrappiness which I have now come to understand defeats the purpose in most cases. I don't have a color theme with mine, I just started cutting my odd scraps that were the right size. I do have them sorted into lights, mediums and darks. What I need to do is grab from the appropriate box and just sew it. I hear a New Year's resolution in the making!

The quilter that quilts most of my larger quilts cuts a tumbler from the scraps of each quilt she finishes for her clients and just adds it to her own tumbler quilt in progress. It is a wonderful souvenir from all the quilts she has quilted. It looks beautiful and she doesn't fuss with the color, pattern or shade.
