Semi-OT: Little House on the Prairie

We went to see the musical production on Sunday. It was lovely. And of course quilts were a big part of the props. I couldn't help thinking how important quilting was in so many ways to the pioneer families. The first thing that was gifted & loaded onto the wagon when Laura married and left home was a beautiful quilt.

Everybody of course wanted an autograph or a picture with Melissa Gilbert. Well, except me. I just wanted to jumjp on the stage and say, "Let me have a better look at that quilt."

The Laura Ingalls Wilder house and museum is located about 20-30 miles from me. Gee, I've never been there yet. I think I need a road trip.... surely they have quilts there???

None that stand out in my memory, but it's worth the trip anyhow, if you're a Laura fan....

The mother of our (fairly) local quilt shop owner is a retired teacher and she does a program based on Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House books. She has made small quilts based on those talked about in the books and does programs at guilds and schools in the area.

We had her back to our Guild last week, where she presented her new program based on Louisa May Alcott.

Really fun.

Oh, you should go! Even if it's just some day when you're bored and just want to go somewhere. I'd love to go. IIRC, the website shows quilt patterns for sale "from the day." I do remember in the books someone was always working on a "nine-patch." I read those books as a kid, and even re-read them not too long ago. Just to put things in perspective!

Oh Leslie, I would definitely go if I had the chance. I loved the Little House books. And yes, quilts did play a part all through the stories. When Mary was losing her vision she would sit on the porch, facing the sun, with a warm quilt tucked around her legs.

What great memories....reading those books. And I read them to my sons, until both rebelled and said the stories were too slow and boring. Drat.
