Does anyone know how to make bed sheets? Fitted as well as flat. My little grandson wants some Thomas the Train sheets, and has fallen in love with the fabric already. But I have no idea where to begin. No, it can't be a quilt, it has to be sheets. His parents want to help him be more willing to sleep in his own big bed by making it feel very kid-friendly. Quilts travel... lol.

Is he in a toddler bed or a full sized twin bed? I made sheets for my youngest son's toddler bed. Let me see if I can find the pattern. It is not difficult to do at all, I just don't remember the measurements right now. I'll get back to you. (BTW I think some of the PS I Love you books have the instructions if you have any of those quilt books)
The dimensions of his mattress at Daddy's house is 27" x 51" x 5". I'll be receiving the measurements of his mattress at Mommy's house soon. I want to order all the fabric for both sets of sheets at the same time.

This is probably an over-simplification - but you could make a pillowcase the size of what would be the bottom sheet. It would be easy to make, easy to put on and just might stay put if he sleeps like a helicopter propeller. Polly
LOL - oh yes, that's exactly how he sleeps. Perhaps at $10.95 a yd. I should go for the fitted sheet idea. But this is a good plan for future kid sheets. Thanks!

That would be toddler size. The fitted sheet takes 2 yds of 45" wide fabric. The flat sheet would be your 51" plus enough to hem the top, and bottom and what ever you want for tucking in (IIRC I used 2 1/2 yds for a nice number to use and had plenty). Most have done pillow cases, but just incase you haven't, it takes about 1 yd to do one of those. That should get you started on figuring the yds. you need. I'm emailing you off list about the instructions.

Thanks, Sherry. I forgot to mention - they don't want him to sleep on the poly cotton blends that those sheets are made of. They want 100% cotton. But thanks!

well, that's interesting! cute fabric, but it seems really strange to have someone in the US buying from a Canadian shop. I did note that the $10.95 is in Canadian dollars. $9.31 US and they give a
15% discount of cuts over 1 yd and 20% of cuts over 5 1/4 yds. I've bookmarked the site for future considerations. $10.95 Canadian is pretty good up here. I picked up a few pieces yesterday and they ranged from $10 - $15 per metre. I passed on the stuff that was $18 per metre.Have fun with your new project.

Have you thought about getting an old sheet- even from a thrift store- and opening it up and using it for a pattern? That would be my first thought.

I really like this idea! And since the target fabric is rather pricey (gotta pay licensing . . . ) why not make one half out of the target fabric, for the top, and the bottom out of another fabric? The other fabric could be anything, but a regular flat sheet comes to mind.

Also, they say it's a VIP fabric. Walmart around here carries VIP brand, is there one of those stores near you to check?

I purchased Thomas prints at Joanns and Hancocks
Pre-shrink fabric. Cut fabric as large as the mattress top, plus the depth of mattress on all sides, plus a few inches tuck under on all sides, plus a nice 1" allowance for casing. Drape on the mattress wrong side out, center, and pin the excess at all four corners. Baste those corner seams and test on mattress BEFORE you finish the seams. When satisfied, cut extra fabric, and finish the seams with serger, or white muslin strips. Make self casing, or add casing of white muslin. Insert elastic through the short ends, and secure. Enjoy! PAT in VA/USA PS: If you do not have access to the mattress, find one of same size for the model, and be sure to allow some extra depth.
I bought some heavier cotton to make scrubs for our DIL who just graduated from nursing school and matching ones for their 1 year old daughter. Cute little cartoon animals in health care type poses, for the tops and plain pink for the bottoms. While there I picked up some reds, greens and golds with a future Christmas quilt in mind. Now I just need time to sew! Getting into that pre-Christmas rush. Our customers all need things 'yesterday' so they can get their projects done in time for the holiday. It's great for business but not leaving me much time for "fun" stuff!
