Setting up my quilting room

Recently I started setting up a quilting/sewing room for myself from what used to be a bedroom. It is the smallest room in the house 11' wide by 12' long. I own an antique featherweight card table and my featherweight sits on it ready to use at all times. This is in front a a 6' window, so the lighting during the day is great. My problem is lighting at night. There is no room for a floor lamp. I had an ott floor lamp but I ended up knocking it over and breaking it, My cutting table is an antique kitchen island. This is the perfect height for me to cut at and provides a lot of storage space but does not have an overhang large enough to put a clamped on Ott light. I was thinking the room is small enough that maybe overhead lighting above the cutting table (situated in the the center of the room) would provide me with good lighting but what kind? I would love to know what others have done to solve a similar problem.

I have a ceiling light/fan combination, over the main cutting table in the middle of the room, with 4 lamps that can be directed at specific spots of usage need; a chair, computer area, ironing area, sewing area. Also a 4 ' long suspended florescent work light directly over the main sewing machine. You can never have too much light over a task area. John

If you can put a hook into the ceiling then you can hand a pendant lamp over your cutting table. Then a second hook in the ceiling above your wall socket where you want to plug in the lamp.

Just remember -- if your ceiling light is centered in the room -- and your sewing table is against the window -- your body will likely block the ceiling light from shining on your sewing machine.

A couple of small plant hooks in the ceiling and you can easily suspend a shop light or a couple of pendants directly over the sewing area.

Happy Sewing!!

I've got two similar to anglepoise but from Ikea so very cheap. They clamp onto the back of my table so don't take up any space and I can't knock them off. I have just got normal bulbs in them.

good for you! just remember, some bulbs will cast shadows more than others. pendant lighting is good, but make sure the bulb is bright enough, and not too far away. i miss my sewing room. have fun!

Have you thought about track lighting? You can aim the various lamps right where you need them.

I have daylight bulbs in mine and they really make a difference.
