Sewing and Quilting

Actually I started out sewing clothes, now the only clothes I sew are bicycle shorts made with lycra that I wear to bed. That's it. I can't stand to sew clothes. I love my quilts to much. They are like a work of art and a piece of me goes into each one. The clothes were nice and I got really good at making them but it's just not the same. Now you should see my reaction if someone asks me to mend something...lol I will only mend for family and only if I can't afford to buy the same item new. Quilting comes first.

Now I have a delem> How many of you quilt and sew clothes, also? The reason I ask is that

I don't sew clothes and never really have, I had to sew a dress at school and I made a skirt once, I don't particularly enjoy it and much prefer to use the sewing machine for more artistic things, even if that's not necessarily quilting.

I've altered clothes though, that is worth doing, I changed cheap normal clothes into breastfeeding clothes, which are ridiculously expensive. I'm musing at the moment over making some trousers as I haven't found anything that meets my needs in the shops, but it's for need not pleasure!

My daughter asked me to make her a pair of slacks. They are half finished and I have been avoiding the chore of finishing them. At one time, I made all her clothes and mine. I also made all my son's western shirts and even made a few "leisure suits" for DH and DS.

I am now a quilter and dread the thought of sewing clothing, unless they have some quilting involved!

Made most of my clothes, back in the dark ages. Then when we had enough income, it seemed such a pleasure to just buy them. Quilting took over my life at about the same time -hmm, maybe there's a connection? Anyhow, DD1 gave me a Threads subscription last year. They occasionally have quilting-related articles, but it's mostly clothing. And I felt inspired! Found a gorgeous piece of silk tweed and made a jacket. Lined in silk too. (And silk works just fine in crazy quilts.) So it looks like I'll be making the occasional garment, when fabric lust strikes. But I won't go back to ordinary clothes. Roberta in D
