We just returned from Omaha where we attended the funeral of my husband's uncle. The time with family was good. We had not seen some of the cousins in many years. After the funeral and dinner we gathered around a table and looked at pictures that had been found while cleaning his home. (His wife had died in May. They had no children so clearing their house had been left to a great niece from his wife's side) Most of the pictures dated from WWII through 1960's. (lesson learned by all--identify picture as soon as you take them. We went through two shoe boxes full. Most pictures we could identify but some from WWII we didn't know.)
The drive from Chicago to Omaha is about seven hours so we needed a break. Winterset, Iowa, just west of Des Moines was chosen because it wasn't too far off the interstate and is home of Fons and Porter's store. The best thing about the store was seeing the quilt models for the current magazine issue. The colors of the brown and gold quilt is much more pleasing in person. I am still tempted to order a kit. I purchased the John Flynn double wedding ring template set and two yards of a novelty print. The store front is an extension of their mail order business. I doubt the small town could support a store without the mail order. I was disappointed that after spending $50 they wouldn't let me use the bathroom. They did direct me to a public bathroom across the street.
Late Saturday afternoon I was able to check-out two quilt stores in Omaha. The first was forgettable. The samples quilts were not quilted and the store was disorganized. I was able to purchase some older Jo Morton fabrics.
The second store, Country Sampler, was a big hit. The samples were well made and signed. I like it when a sample is accompanied by a sign telling me where the pattern can be found and if a kit is available. Small vignettes were placed around the store showcasing quilt samples and giftware. It gave you ideas on how to display the smaller quilts. I arrived shortly before closing but they were happy to let me shop quickly and use the bathroom even though they were locking the door as I came in. I only purchased two patterns but what can you do in 10 minutes. If I am ever back to Omaha I will make sure I visit this store early in the day.
After visiting the two stores we drove to a cousin's far just west of Des Moines. We had a late supper with them and then were treated to their local fireworks show. It was so much fun to be close to the fireworks. In Chicago they launch the fireworks out over the lake so you are never very close. We went to church with them in the morning and then pointed the car toward Chicago. Besides the free meals, fireworks and comfortable bed we came home with fresh garden produce. Can't beat that.
We are very happy that we made the trip. We drove 1000 miles in three days but were able to reconnect with that side of Dave's family. We have promised ourselves that we won't wait until another funeral to make the drive back to western Iowa.
