Tip for less wasted fabric with PFP

If I am doing several blocks of the same pattern... I'll take an index card (save all those magazine inserts) and cut a template that is about 1/2 inch larger than the actual finished portion of the pattern. That way I have the
1/4" seam all around... with just a wee bit extra. If the piece is at a strange angle -- I will lie the fabric piece (cut using the template) in place and then finger press the seam line. Seams to work well for me .... without a great deal of waste.
I hope that makes sense.

That's the trick I keep posting here every time someone says they can't think "backward" with paper piecing! It clicked for me several years ago. No more holding pieces up to the light to see if they fit.....well, I never did figure that out anyway. I can use this trick to purposely put a stripe going the way I want, center a motif on a fabric or put the straight of grain on the edge of the piece. This is the only way I paper piece. The one thing I do differently is that I prefold all the seam lines to help visualize the pieces as I'm fitting them. It also helps with the removal later.

that's a great tip. I recently made a pfp that had really small pieces and odd angles. That would have helped a lot
