To our Vikings

Nope. No looting, pillaging or burning. Just an SM question for you Viking fanatics. My neighbor has a new Viking - I'd guess it's about 18 months old. I don't know the given name for her treasure, but she has 'cards' that she changes when going to stitches such as blanket / appliqué / buttonhole. The cards are carefully stored in a plastic thing. Anyhow. Her appliqué card decided to de-magnetize itself. (I have no idea what that means, I'm just quoting.) A replacement card so she could continue with her appliqué project cost her more than $70. I have all kinds of alarm bells going off in my little head. How could this happen (the de-magnetize)? How could she prevent it from happening again? What in Sam Hill is she going to do when it happens and Viking is no longer making the cards for her model SM? Very puzzled and concerned and anxious to hear from our Vikings. Polly

Hi Polly,

I have a 6-year old Viking 1+ machine, and it uses cards for the embroidery. The cards work just like a computer disc, where you can store files on it....it's the arrangement of the magnetic surface on the card that 'makes' the designs. So, one needs to be careful to keep the cards away from a magnetic source (i.e. don't lie the card down on a magnet or near motors, or computer speakers, which have magnets in them) because they can be easily erased or the files on the cards corrupted.

Magnets and magnetic surfaces can be de-magnitized many ways..one way is to heat it, the other is to run an electric current through it.

I can still get cards for my machine via eBay (used of course but sometimes new) and by special order through my Viking dealer....

Well, golly, Irene. That's an awful lot of trouble to manage for a simple stitch that a plain old 1960 Singer could do. More important, we haven't heard from you and your DD's burns. Is her recovery going well or do you need to ship some gator meds to the Swamp? Polly

You're right, Polly, I have not posted an update! I've been sick with a sinus infection for over a month, and am on my *3rd* round of antibiotics. It's finally starting to clear out, and my head has stopped trying to burst. Maybe *I'm* the one who needs the gator meds lol

DD is doing very well, and the doctor is pleased with her recovery. The graft is finally starting to look 'normal,' at this point it looks like a huge bruse with sharply defined edges. He gave her the OK to leave it unwarpped when she's at home, to get the air to it. She doesn't go back to see him for another 6 weeks now; I suspect that might be the last visit she has with him, or if not only one more.

Thanks so much for asking about her, Polly. You are a dear!

We've just been so concerned about you both and needed to know that you were doing well. Hope her dr knows all about what needs to be done - vitamins, sunscreen, and the new stuff to prevent scars. Polly

I'm glad she's doing so well, but it still sounds pretty scary to me!

You look after yourself as well. I know all about evil sinus infections

- I still get way too many! I know when a standard head cold has turned into a secondary sinus infection when I start feeling like molten lava slugs wearing tackety boots are hammering their way out of my face, taking a short cut through the bone, and I start making copious quantities of luminous green slime. Luckily I'm one of the few in my family who respond well to amoxycillin!

I have a Viking that I dearly love sewing with. That said, however, I'm not thrilled with the company. You have to have what is called a 'dongle' to utilize the outrageously expensive embroidery software. It kind of looks like a flash drive thingie. If you lose your 'dongle' (stop laughing!), you get to repurchase your outrageously expensive software. If you break your 'dongle', you get to send it in and it costs about $150 to replace it.

I know about software piracy, but this is ridiculous.

Not if you don't use their software. I gave up on theirs years ago and use Embird. Bye, bye dongle. Gen

It sounds as if she got it too close to some magnetic source---pin holder, magnetic seam guide, etc. Gen

I tried. I really tried. Still laughing. Wonder if I can straighten up enough to explain to my friend? Naaaah. Polly

~ delicately snipped~

The 1+ uses reader cards, the Designer1 uses a dongle.......this is what I was told anyway. I have a Designer1 and I *do* have a dongle, having never heard that term before acquiring the bazillion dollar piece of no nothing software equipment always makes me snicker. I generally don't make this public knowledge around the less savvy. I was once told on the job (I worked heavy construction for many years) after a rather harrowing experience that I had brass balls, I almost snappily retorted ....."yeah, well it's all part of the package boys, I have a dongle worth gold, too".......but I seriously doubted if the guys would've got that and having to go into detailed explanations of your joke vastly reduces the 'guffaw factor'.

I have the Designer II. I use card reader to read my embroidery patterns, need the dongle for the embroidery program so that I can see what it will look like printed out, and to convert from one format to another

Don't know a thing about Viking. I have an old Bernina 1630. It has "keys" which are computer-type thingies that plug into the bottom right side of the machine. I had 3, but wanted more. They consist of embroidery designs that this machine can do. I got a couple on eBay, but they're hard to find. I also got some from a dear member here, who decided she couldn't live without the BSR. She sold all of her old Bernina 1630 stuff -- a lot of it to me! I had considered doing the same thing, but I do love my 1630. There are things on it that I still haven't figured out or tried.

My LQS sells Bernina, but just the new stuff. If you need something for older machines, I suggest you look on eBay. Sooner or later, it's there.

Ohmigosh, I'm so tired I thought your were talking about the Minnesota Vikings! I thought we were toasting a winning team!

I haven't done any sewing in weeks, but I've had football games on TV to energize me while I grade papers. Used to be that I had to wait until my mom left the house on Sundays while my dad watched football games, then I was allowed to sew as long as the mess was cleaned up before mom got home. I promise to quilt during football games this Sunday.

Kay, you are really, seriously tired. We recommend a bubble bath, 72 hours rest and some group therapy. Start with dark chocolate and a QI on your lap to love on. Want me and the gators to come over and protect your need for quiet time? Polly

You aren't alone -- my first thought when I saw the subject line was the Minnesota Vikings, too. Of course, I am a Minnesotan, though not a Viking fan. My husband is from Wisconsin and we lived there for a while, too, so DH and the kids are Green Bay Packer fans. I like it when the Packers win, because the rest of my family is easier to get along with :) I'm not really a football fan at all; Sunday afternoons are a good time to sew, while DH watches football.

Thanks for the link! I love those webcams that update every few moments. I think I'll start a folder for them. Do any of you have favorites? I'd especially like them from all over the world. Let's see....I know there was one in Rottenburg Germany when DD was there a few years ago. I think I'll go look for that one. KJ
