update on QI

Well, a week ago one of our two golden retrievers had a large growth removed from her side. We just got the test results back, and the news was grim. (A grade three mass cell tumor? for those that understand these things.) Apparently, very agressive. We have decided that since she is almost 13, that we will not put her through chemo. At this time her only complaint is the 36 staples they put in her after removing the growth and those should come out on Thurs. Otherwise she is still perky, and playful. Thanks for any good thoughts and prayers that came her way. I'm still very hopeful that she will be around for sometime yet.

Marilyn-

I'm going thru the same thing with Missy, my precious darling 12 y.o. Golden. She has a cancer under her nose and in her upper gum area. It's been seven months since her diagnosis- the vet gave her only a month or two but she's still happy and playful and eating well. She sleeps more and goes off by herself a little more often now. So chin up, you may have her wonderful company for longer than you think. Make every day a special day for her and you. Missy is allowed anything she wants- she even gets some chocolate nowadays. VBG Hugs and prayers for your baby girl and you.

So sorry to hear. Hopefully having the tumour removed will make her more comfortable.

Maui just got a diagnosis of some variant of lymphoma, and will be doing chemo, but chemo for a cat, for this type of cancer, seems to be a pill-a-day, and an extra one every third day. We can do that.

I've had 3 previous cats, all eventually lost to cancer, but it is possible to keep them comfortable for some time. The furry darlings don't know they have cancer - they only know they feel good, or they don't. Ask your vet about things like pain medication, fluid therapy, whatever sorts of things can make her comfortable. A couple of my cats were given pain patches and gained much comfort and several happier weeks near the end - they were eating better, active and purring, with some appropriate supportive care. The did eventually let me know when it was too much, usually by refusing food.

Good luck, and love ever day you have with her.

Marilyn, So sorry to hear this news. We have Labs - same personalities. Our original male, Hirsh E Barr, was diagnosed with a VERY agressive form of cancer after similar surgery (spleen removal). We also opted to not do chemo. He was like a puppy again after his surgery right up until the cancer reappeared elsewhere. We were lucky enough to have him sire his last litter and leave us with Hirsh E's Nugget! As others have said, we never have them with us long enough. We just have to enjoy each day and give them lots of hugs and love.

Hugs for you and your baby. She may surprise everyone yet. But it does make us appreciate our short time together doesn't it?

Best wishes and healing thoughts for your QI, Marigold! What is her name?

BTW, Dora sends along a healing and loving purr. She loves goldens!

Thanks everyone for your kind wishes.

Carolyn, her name is Treasure, and she really is. I don't think I've ever had a dog this intelligent before. I've been told that dogs typically have the vocabulary understanding of a two year old. This one I'm sure is up to 3 yr old understanding. My DH laughs at me and my conversations with her. She even makes little grunty noises in response. I rarely use commands with her.

Our other dog, Marty is a real boy. I call him a bull in a china shop, or pretty boy. He is a gorgeous dog of average intelligence for a golden, and has tons of enthusiasm! He is 8 yrs old, so I hope we have him around for quite a few more years. We also have 3 cats, one trys to pretend the dogs don't exist, and the other 2 snuggle right up with them. Treasure says thanks to Dora for the purrs! :)

Treasure--a perfect name for a Golden! They are, aren't they? Hoping for the best for Treasure and for you.

Prayers for your canine QI, that even if she is ill, her days will be fun-filled with new quilts to inspect. Peaceful passing prayers also, if that is appropriate.
