Very Nice Yardage Calculator Site

Very nice yardage calculator!!

I just used it to calculate some yardages for a project I'm working out (am considering a Hunters Star quilt). If my math is accurate, then the calculator is accurate. So if I were purchase exactly what it says I need for all my shapes, I should have exactly enough for my quilt (I plan to purchase extra just incase, and I would love to have left overs any way).

You select the shape of the piece you need (choices are square, rectangle, HST, HRectangeT, QST, trapezoid and parallelogram), enter it's size (finished or cut), how many you need, and WOF. It then gives you a page that states the shape, how many pieces you entered, both cut and finished dimensions, and cutting directions along with the required yardage (appears to be rounded up to the nearest 8th yd). The cutting instructions tell you how many strips of what size to cut, including your WOF entered. It then tells you how many pieces from each strip and if there are any spare it will tell you how many extra you end up with. I was really impressed (can't you tell)!!

NAYY, just really liked and thought I'd share.

Help!!

Charlotte, I raced off to try this and got GREAT results for most of the shapes, but got totally confused on basic QSTs. I get the measurements OK but it tells me to cut in a way that will have the bias on the outside of the square finished block, and when I asked for 24 triangles it gave me instructions for halving 24 squares and getting 24 extra pieces.

I must be doing something wrong, and it's probably so obvious that you will laugh - but I can't figure it out. Maybe it's just too early in the morning LOL

I asked for 24 QSTs from 45" fabric for a finished square block of 12" and got 1.625y. The material req is about twice what I think I need and the cutting directions are off. What am I doing wrong?

I did calculations for sqrs., HST, trapezoids and parallelograms that all turned out OK. But then I did some calculations QST this evening and got the same type of results as you did (needed 972 and would have 988 extra!!). According to the site that part is new, so I'm assuming that there are some bugs that haven't been fixed yet. I did send a message so that they site owner would be aware of it. Did you also notice how it was telling you to cut them? If you used the measurements given your triangles were not the correct size. It was also saying to cut squares and then cut them diagonally in to 2 triangles and you would have your QST~ Not right those are HST!! What I did instead was enter my square that the QST were being cut from and used a no. required of 1/4 the number of triangles I really needed. Worked out fine that way.

Sorry this happened after I was raving about it. Even with the bad calculations, I still really like the site, but that is JMHO.

I love the site and have it bookmarked! TVM for finding it. I am just relieved that I am not going dotty just yet LOL They may yet iron out the bugs. But the rest of the shapes work great!!

(although I don't doubt the day is coming soon!)
