It appears there is an "Epic" storm (according to the Weather Channel) that is blasting across the country. And flooding in the Dakotas. I hope everyone battens down the hatches and does OK though all this......snow, blizzard, tornados, floods.....be safe!!!!!
After the floods there in 1997, quilters sent books and fabrics to fellow quilters who had lost their stashes in the floods. We may have the same opportunity again!
I'm doing what I can. I'm allowing a tributary of the Buffalo River to run though my lower living level. my sewing and quilting rooms, second living room, exercise room, music area, laundry and storage and bath rooms. Estimated damage on hold.
Oh Rhoda......I'm so sorry. I've witnessed what this looks like this past year....not at my home though. I hope you had time to remove as much as possible.
Many thanks for the prayer. We are doing the work ourselves after all we are only 93 and 87 (on the 2nd of April) and determined. I've moved a few quilts and my Janome. We're having a break today as the temps are 10 to 14 degrees ... water and sand baggers are having trouble moving full force. It's the Red River that is still surging higher and higher.
I double check my sump pumps every hour, and throw another dry towel where the foundation blinks an eye and allows water to get in. We're going to be o.k. Roy is taking a few extra naps to keep going. Gotta go!
Rhoda Really an Iowan at heart. What's that Des Moines River doing??? Anyone know?
For those who are not real aware of the geography surrounding the Red River: the Red River runs along the boundary between North Dakota and northern Minnesota. One reason it floods so easily is that it flows north into Canada, towards Hudson Bay. The problem with that is that the snow and ice melt in the south (MN & ND) before Hudson Bay has melted. This means that the water from the thaw cannot run downstream (north), toward Hudson Bay, so it rises. The river valley is wide and relatively flat, so it is very flood-prone. Those of us living in the Midwest are accustomed to hearing of spring flooding in the Red River valley, though this year is worse than it has ever been. I haven't heard of any flooding in the Mississippi Valley and it's tributaries yet, though that is sometimes later than the Red River valley.
If you can, please contribute to agencies that are doing flood relief there; some that I am aware of are Salvation Army, Red Cross, and Lutheran Disaster Relief. Giving online is a good way to put your contributions to work quickly.
Rhoda - I'll be praying for you both. I truly admire your gumption - I hope I have that kind of "can-do" attitude when I face the kind of trouble you're facing.
