WAY WAY OT: pierced ears

way back when i got mine pierced, they said to clean them with alcohol or peroxide once or twice a day. Today when DD1 got hers pierced (10th bday gift) they said under no circumstances should you use those, they dry out the ears too much... buy our stuff instead and use it 3 or 4 times a day... I assume their horror stories were a ploy to buy their stuff... why could i not use peroxide? I did buy a small jug of their stuff - benzalkonium chloride 0.12% w/w and purified water

and i am also guessing i should wait a week or so to clean the wax out of her ears with debrox /peroxide/warm water solutions? meant to do that last night....

ah the joys of growing up....

"what we used after DS pierced our ears." ???? he did the piercing! I don't think I would ever let one of my sons near me with something sharp enough to put a hole in my ear! LOL

Mind you I have no medical training, but IMHO both may sting a little (or alot), but I would think that you would be ok using either of them. Some people have said to never use peroxide on wounds, etc because it damages tissue in the surrounding area, but I still use it for various open wounds and have them heal fine. When I end up with issues with my earring holes I use which ever one is handiest and easiest to find in the cupboard at the time. I got mine pierced in the second grade about 20-25 years ago. I was given a solution called something like sea breeze?? I remember that I liked the smell for some reason, but hated the stinging on my ears.

As for cleaning out her ears, for my sons I put rubbing alcohol on a q tip and use that to clean them. Shouldn't have any issues with the piercing with that method.

I used stuff called 'Ear Care' when I got mine done 10 yrs ago you can also get it from chemists, here in Oz.

Same here. Peroxide.

...and at a higher cost than peroxide, I'm sure :) =20

My parents first pierced my ears when I was a baby. Then again at about

8 or 9 due to the first holes being too far up my ear. The elderly Italian lady - friend of the family - who did them the first time also did them the second time did piercings for all the Italian kids with -- get this -- a peeled potato, a piece of ice, and a upholstry needle and string!! You know, I didn't feel a thing! She rubbed my ear with the ice, it got numb....then she just put the threaded needle through, using a potato on the other side to hold the ear lobe stiff. She then tied the string off, and taaadaaa!!! Done! I just moved the string around a few tiems a day and doused it with the peroxide. In a few weeks, she took out the thread and put in studs. =20

Many years later I had a second set of holes put in when I was 25, by my doctor (my mother's friend had died by then). Still used peroxide, as per the doctor's orders...no problem this time.

When I got my third set done, though (about ten years later) I had a

*heck* of a time with them. This time it was done at Spencer Gifts at the mall, and I bought their piercing stuff and used it instead of alcohol. One ear got badly infected; I ended up having to let that hole close.

So now I have 2-1/2 piercings -- it's not too bad because now, if I can still wear earrings if I lose one :) Still, I should have used peroxide on the last piercings, too.

DGDs was done by her pediatrician at age 6 weeks and they used peroxide - no problem. 8 years later - still no problem.

well that was kinda my thoughts too... they were worried that i wanted to get her the stainless steel posts instead of the 14KT posts for allergic reasons, but i was more worried about their solution :) think i will keep some more peroxide on hand...

I'd just use Neosporin on them. That stuff is great.

I had my first holes done back in about '75 or '76, and I went to all the fuss and bother they told me to.

9 more piercings later I don't bother much anymore.

After my um, lower, piercing I came to realize that there just isn't any point to fussing about with antiseptics and all unless you have a problem or are prone to infection in the first place.

Keep clean and don't mess with it til it is well and properly healed is my philosophy on piercings anymore.

My piercer recomends betadine if you feel better about useing something like that.

I've always wanted to know..... doesn't that hurt being done ????

DD had that sticky out bit in her ear done ( just can't remember the name) and that did hurt. This was done at the chemist (and was expensive). She was given 2 bottles of stuff to bath the piercing with. Give me sleepers and metho any day

yeah, it hurts some... kinda like getting a immunization shot... not as bad as i remember Tetnus shots to be though... lobes hurt the least. the farther up you go on the ear the more it hurts. I have 3 holes in one ear and 2 in the other. never cared to go back and even that out! (split the earring package with a friend that day) But DD1 is very stoic and didn't even flinch, although she did brace herself for the second ear :~)

unfortunately i have to take all 3 kids for shots tomorrow (one shot each) I doubt if any of them will be that stoic at the dr's office.

I was getting my hair cut in San Francisco, and I saw a flyer that said they were looking for models for a big piercing show. Guess if you don't mind getting pierced in front of a crowd you could get it done for free. It didn't say if you could pick your location, just that you had to be willing to be pierced anywhere.
