Which batting to use?

I've just finished piecing the second of 2 single bed quilts for my 2 grandsons. Been a while since I've been patching so out of date. Now I need to get the batting and get on with finishing them and I can't make up my mind which batting to use. Will be machine quilting. The boys are both almost 8 (lots of washing), they live in Townsville, Qld (Oz tropical zone for those who don't quite know where it is) but the winters still get a bit cold for those up there who's blood has climatized/thinned. I have access to the Matilda's Own brand. I don't know whether to go with the O-Sew-Soft 100% poly or the Cotton/Poly blend. Not sure about using the wool/blend because of the issues with skin problems and lanolin in the families. I haven't used either one of those and don't know how they stand up to wear. Can sks advise me which would be their choice of batting, please?

I would use the cotton/poly blend rather than the 100% poly. It will be more comfortable to sleep under year round. It will also be easier to quilt because the cotton has a tendency to cling a bit to the cotton fabric in your top and backing. The 100% poly batting would slip more than the cotton during the quilting process.

Wendy, I asked "Recommend a batt" on July 17 here. There were lots of very helpful thoughts. Do you know how to track back to that post? Polly

I would never use a poly batt for machine quilting -slithers all over the place. Cotton doesn't shift around. My favorite is Hobbs Heirloom, which comes 100% cotton with no scrim or 80% cotton with a poly scrim. Roberta in D

Thank you Julia for that, yes I can see that the cotton blend would be a better choice seeing as I'll be machine quilting.......Wendy

Looks like I'll be going with the cotton, seems to be the batting of choice. Many thanks for replying Roberta

I'd go with the cotton. Even a cotton blend breathes better and is generally more comfortable, especially in a less frigid area.

Cotton is also easier to work with in many ways. It tends to cling to the fabric of the top and back a bit which helps in basting and such.

Of course that is all pers> I've just finished piecing the second of 2 single bed quilts for my 2

Lets' take this one step further. You are aware I'm making a 'Plane Quilt' for DD. She has requested it to be a 'bit fluffier' that normal without being overweight. It will be a normal queen size quilt. I will be using the Quilt As You Go method--all by machine-- NO hand work.

Which batting or TWO battings (layered) should I use? No wool allowed.

Thanks

I'm enjoying Mountain Mist's Gold currently. It has some loft to it and is very well-behaved; Marcella mentioned that Hobbs' Cloud Loft was a nice one for fluff. That's what I'm going to try next. Can you go back to my post of 7/17 'Recommend a Batt'? Really, there were some fine answers but that was when the moon and goblins were messing with our newsgroup posts and I don't know how many may have missed it. Polly

I 'googled it' and could not open any of the posts any further that what was 'shown'. DS says OE is having issues right now so I may try again tomorrow. Hadn't heard of Cloud Loft--so I know I missed her post altogether...thus the question. SIGH Makes me wonder how many other ones I missed. Yesterday I only got a handful and then they started giving me those I had already read from the 15th. Wonder when they will get it all sorted out. I'm so GLAD we ppl keep the original post as it sure helps me :)

Batt-Mart is where I order my batting. I've been happy as a clam except one time when I tried a 'special' bargain they offered. Quoth the Raven. Polly

I call this the archives, but is this what people use when they talk about using Google to read the group?

No summer over here, just rain and horrible floods, though I will admit to being in the driest part of the country - I think the only dry bit, but the tv pictures are just horrendous.

Hey Pati,

How do you think the 80/20 would work for the Lazy Girls Towne Purse? Hadn't thought of using that.

Might want to wash it first, it's designed to shrink a bit! Roberta in D

Thought at first they were the same, but they are different.

Should work fine. Depends on how much body you want in the bag. Of course the amount of quilting, and the thread you use also affects the "stiffness" of the bag.
