Yarn Question OFF TOPIC

Niece, that is going thru chemo again, lost her hair, and has requested a knitted winter hat......what is the BEST softest yarn to use? I don't know if she will wear it with or without her wig....so I thought I'd make a couple--one for indoors and one for out. I found a number of different styles at:

Any and all advice will be appreciated. I hope to go out tomorrow and pick up a practice skein or two.

I can NOT work with wool whatsoever so mohair is out.

It's fluffy, and so soft. *Some* people have been trying to steal the scarves I've made w/ this cloud-soft yarn.

Also collecting Bernat Boa, the "eyelash" yarn; there are 2 afghans and several scarves of that around here now. ;-) Soft, maybe a bit tickly, but everyone loves to pet the yarn & afghans.

These are the 2 I've been playing w/ for the past 2 yrs. YMMV

Prayers & hugs to all of you.

I'm an admitted snob about yarn but it's Kate T.'s fault. She sent some little caps and booties that were so very soft and light they were just about airborne. And, says Kate, you'll still love her yarn choice when it's laundered - something you really want to consider. Go look at the really good stuff at

Thank you. Figured I could manage a hat or two before the snow flies where she's at. the yarn does look 'soft' and if it's not right for her.......I'm sure it'd fit one of the others thereabouts--or even her 'bear'

But the question remains: Can I afford you?

Patons, it is. With 2 votes for...and none agin....off to Michaels tomorrow......and I got a coupon with today's newspaper for there. So, Michaels, and Patons it is.

I found a bunch of patterns on the elann website.

has several and there is also another one on the main free patterns page. There are all in a yarn that you can only (to my knowledge) buy direct from them called Esprit which is cotton with a tiny bit of elastic. As it happens I had bought some of this yarn a while back and not seen these patterns, so I can tell you confidently it is beautifully soft, even compared to some things I would still categorise as soft! There are some bamboo/silk blends that are really lovely. The thing about the Esprit is because it has that elastic in it that you can knit a lot of designs and have stretch and hold shape. I have a bit of bamboo/silk knitting that I just compared to something I knitted in Esprit and it really drapes, which isn't so good for a hat. I'm intending to knit the dayflower hat for myself just because I like it so much!

Thank you for the input. I'm far from a yarn connoisseur but for this I may end up being one. It's been soooooooooooo long since I've been able to use it that I needed to ask.
