about being a book author

I submitted one of my stories for publication and the company came back with offer. They claim they loved my story but offered to publish for $4000, and after the 500th copy sold my $400 would be refundable. Does this sound resonable or hoackie to ya'll?

I work for a local police station in the complaint room, RUN AWAY.

Publishers PAY you after they publish the book. You NEVER pay them.

It is an identity thief scam. If you have given them your social security number PUT A FRAUD ALERT IMMEDIATELY on your ss number. If you have given them money ask for it back claiming you have changed your mind. If they do not give you back your money within a week, take all the paperwork you have including communication and go to your local precinct. You are a victim of a grand larceny scam.

Just remember "What sounds too good to be true, usually is." Especially when your hard earned money is involved.

IMHO,

Kate

I don't think it sounds that good to me. A friend of mine joined a local writers guild and published her own book(s) (she has written 3 so far). The guild has something sort of like conventions at the mall four times a year where the group members sells their books. She also was at Barns & Nobles and all of the local libraries doing talks and book signings That's how she sells her books. Oh, the guild has catalogs with all of the members books listed for sale that they do mailings with. Sandy

Yeah, sounds like a scam to me. I would take Kate's advice.

I don't know what you decided to do... but if it was me I'd RUN. If your book is worth publishing, you should not be paying for the privilege - they should be paying YOU. Vanity publishing is a big scam... if you want to self-publish it and do all the work yourself then go ahead, but don't pay somebody else big bucks for the privilege! With modern technology you can do everything yourself from your own home.
