Discussion Item: What makes an LSS great?

I'm really curious as to what makes you say WOW, this is a great scrapbook store? What is it that will make you go back again and again?

A clerk who crafts! The people who work at our Michael's have no idea what the stuff they sell is for. Their buyers don't, either -- they will have a tool with no refills, for example, or won't have any idea what a product is that you might ask for. I'd love to buy some rub-ons, but nobody there knows what I'm talking about.

First and foremost is a great staff. I love going to a LSS and being greeted and helped. Another thing is lots of different items. I like trying new things and techniques, so it's fun to have a store that keeps a good supply of stock. I haven't gotten to go to any, but another thing I like is the classes and crop sessions. Having classes scheduled at times that people who work can make it is great. There is one by me that let me try out a new tool before buying it. She had one out for the crop area and let me try all the stuff out. THat was really awesome.

I expect and appreciate good customer service. I'm there to spend money at least acknowledge my presence! Lots of variety of products with examples of lo's using them. A crop area and variety of classes is nice.

I love my LSS because she always has the newest stuff out. She even orders paper and stickers local high schools and elementary's names on them.

#1....Great Customer Service!

  1. Product Knowledge of new and old product and tools.
  2. Current in Merchandise trends and have it available
  3. Good Merchandising through out the store. It should have lot's of Ideas for me to see and the product should be made to look cool on the wall or shelves.
  4. Good Classes
  5. Kiddie Area (on site babysitter would be cool) and Scrap Area
  6. Starbucks next door

The friendly staff and a great selection. Good lighting helps. (Does that mean that I'm getting old? )

I'm like everyone else - good customer service; a bright well lit store; classes; the ability to try out new tools before buying; special ordering things I need/want; lots of cardstock; I also like to shop at a store where they greet me by name when I come in the door and point out the new items added since my last trip. I also love my LSS as they e-mail us whenever a new shipment comes in to let us know what they have added to the store. They also will hold new items for us to pick up. I like the 10% discount on store purchases on the nights I attend a class. Sandy

I would have to say a few things,

  • Customer Service
  • Good selection of products
  • Products used in Samples
  • Ability to use expensive items before buying
  • Interesting and diversified classes for all levels
  • Reasonable price points
  • Gift cards

Cardstock. If a store carries lots of different textured cardstocks in lots of colors then I will return. I also like stores that sell brads and eyelets by the piece and ribbons and fibers by the yard since I usually don't need

30 green football helmet brads or more than a yard or two of a fiber. I like stores that have a large variety of tools and dies so I can cut what I want.

The owner of the lss here that closed had a basket on the counter with homemade embellishments that she made. There would be 3-4 different ones at any given time and you were welcomed to take whatever you wanted. She was very talented and I miss that basket. The lss I go to now gives you gift bags when you shop there. My SIL told us her friend never gets good bags like they give to me but I suspect they have different values depending on how much you spend and how often you shop there. They get about 50% of my scrapping dollars so I always get a large bag of stuff. This keeps me going back even though I usually give away most of the stuff in the bag. Oh and they have a card and when you hit a $100 they give you a $5 gift certificate and on certain holidays/events they will double it to $10. I get one everytime I go LOL.......

I like spacious aisles. I liked it when the items are grouped appropriately...I seem to hunt for stuff at Michael's but I like the way Achiever's had things laid out. I rarely have time to spend 30+ minutes browsing a store. I'm after something and I want to find it quickly.

I don't care if they greet me when I walk in, but if I do have a question then I want the person to be available, able to answer my question, and be friendly about it.

I like the store to have crops & classes. I rarely go, but enjoy dreaming about them. :-)

I like beautiful examples displayed around to give me ideas and to inspire. If possible, I do take the time to browse the LO displays. Places like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, Target, and Walmart don't have this. You only get this warm fuzzy in real a LSS.

(hhuummpprhh - dumb question for me as those WHO have went and shopped with me - LOL!)

PAPER, lots of it, well organized, new styles and colors and projects showing how it is used!!

I look for and do a good job cleaning out sales areas as that is where I get my stash for all the freebies others so richly deserve!!

But as with most, GOOD if not GREAT customer service which not only means acknowledging me when I come in, but KNOWS the craft. I hate people that 'pretend" they know what you mean, want or need - aaahhhh!!!!!
