flowers <?>

What type of flowers do you like to use on a lay-out, cards etc. I want to shop for flowers so I thought I might get some ideas here ;)

Thanks Ruby

Hi Ruby, I don't use flowers much except for die-cuts and stickers but I know you can get very cute silk flowers in all shapes and sizes at any craft store. I found very cute small daisy's today at Wal-Mart that I thought would be excellent for scrapbooking. Just look around at your local craft stores and see what you can find :)

I'm sure some of these other ladies can give you more specific brands and stuff like that.

I go to the dollar store and get those little cheap leis and take them apart and used those flowers...sometimes I'll get some pretty artificial bouquets at Michael's or Hobby Lobby and take those apart. Takes a little bit of time, but it's a lot cheaper than those few they sell in fancy packages! And just as nice.

I went to Michaels and got 1 silk flower stem in all the different colors I wanted. I took them a part and I probably have enough flowers for a life time of projects now. All the stems I got cost less than one bottle of those fancy scrapbook flowers I see at the shops.

Well now, I had never even thought using silk flowers on stems and taking them apart. Those Prima Flowers in the little jars are SO expensive! I have even looked online on Ebay for little flowers cheaper than what you can find in the jars, and I just can't spend that kind of moneyin flowers. I dont use them that often, but I might find new uses for small flowers now! haha! Thanks for the tip! :-)

Thanks so much for the ideas!!

I did take apart some silk flowers that I had and they are really nice!! I just used different colors of button for the centers----now I am thinking of other things to make the centers from...hmmmm

I love the PRIMA "SPRITES"! I was at a scrabook store...and the girl there showed me how to emboss using a stencil, an embossing tool and a tracing light. once you emboss it, it leaves the lineout of what you stenciled and you cut around it..so cute!!.. it seems like the PRIMA "SPRITES" are embossed using the same sort of technique. wouldn't it be wonderful to find a flower stencil and emboss your own?? :) :) -------IS IT THE SAME TECHIQUE???

Ruby...firstly...welcome to RCS.

Like others have said, buy blooms from the local dollar store and dismantle them....cheaper than Prima flowers. The sunflowers, daisy, gerbera or chrysanthymum type can be very effective on a LO. Hydrangea flowers petals can be layered to represent smallers flowers on LO's and cards. Another good way is to use a flower punch and hand-made papers...they can be shaped over scissors or a bone folder, then use a bead or brad as a center. I have several flower dies that can be shaded or adjusted to give a look of dimension but my fav is my SpellbindersWizard. It cuts and embosses. If you use their dies you get the best of both worlds but you can also use brass stencils to emboss then cut by hand....as you have described :)

Something she may not have shown you was that you can stencil emboss, turn the item over with stencil still attached, colour or shade with chalk or pigment ink pad (Cat's Eyes are great for this), or dab through with a Versamark pad, add clear or glitter embossing powder, then use a heat gun. This give you a glazed finish and you can still cut out the embossed item as before.

Take care, Marilyn

I'm with everyone here. Except sometimes I fill in the middle of the flower with a brad.

Hi Kate! :) I did try using the brads but the flowers I have (I already had them--they were not intended for scrapbooking LOL) they are bigger and the brads looked too small for the center---thats when I decided the buttons looked better...I want different size flowers when I buy them...but as I said, I just used some that I already had :) thanks! I love using brads!! :) Ruby
