Has anyone started their holiday cards yet?

I haven't, but I enjoyed making them so much last year that I'll be making some more this year too.

I have made all of mine and made the envelopes for them too - I was really pleased with how they turned out - they are like a square piece of paper folded unusually kind of into four and there is a ribbon handle on the top and when you pull it the card kind of unfolds. I don't know how to describe it lol - but I got the idea from a handmade valentine card someone sent me last year. I never think to buy cards any more - just always make them. I normally start making them in the summer but wasn't going to send any this year - I planned to send a Happy New Year card along with a birth announcement hen the baby arrives but then found some christmassy paper that needed to be used up :)

What style are you making this year?

I haven't, but I've been trying to come up with ideas. I'm definitely going to do them; I just don't know what yet. I went to a holiday card class at Archiver's, but they all had metal charms, expensive stickers, etc. I figure they would end up costing more than buying really, really nice ones. I want to do them using just paper, ribbon and/or fabric. Do you buy card packs or make your own out of cardstock? Do you make your own envelopes?

I buy the blank cards and envelopes. They come in all sizes and colors. I like to make the different folds and "windows" in them ,too.

I started tonight. My mom was throwing away several cross stitch items she had made for ornaments. I salvaged them and am going to use some for cards. Tonight I paper pieced a Santa, Gingerbread house, and ornaments with help from my Sizzix. I cut out some ornaments and made a shaker box card. Tomorrow I will do some stamping. DH (who hardly takes notice) saw my Santa and said "That's good, you should embelllish that somehow w/ some beads, glitter or something." I guess he is slowly coming around to my way of thinking. I just have a hodge podge of cards I am making. Jacqui

I've almost finished mine. Last year I made them all (162) and will be doing so again. I have a weird "habit" of sending my Christmas cards and packages the day after Thanksgiving when everybody else is shopping. So, I've got to get them finished. I make 10 designs and do multiples of them so I don't go insane either making all the same one or by trying to make too many different designs. I don't make my own envelopes and don't use the blank cards that are sold as I want the background to be a "color" (not white or vanilla).

Oh heck, mine are simple. Last year was the first year I ever made any. Mainly I made them w/ the sole purpose of using up some of my stash. I didn't have a single one that looked the same. I just bought a pack of blank cards & envies on sale last year at HL. I still have plenty left. Your's sound beautiful though Jane.

Uhmmmm, I finished weeks ago. Now I just have to address, sign and put stamps on so they're ready to go after Thanksgiving.

Well...I...uhhh...I had really good intentions last year, really I did. I stamped one design, but it requires adding color. Well, I never did get all

100-something of them done. I did get enough done for our church, but no one else got any. Sooo....I'll be using some of last year's this year and probably make some different ones to send out, too. But I haven't started on them yet! (Guess I'd better get busy.)

Hi Katrina

I'm planning to make mine myself for the first time this year. I think my friends and family are going to have a (pleasant) shock! I've got a funny pic of me and the hubby taken last x'mas in our pj's, him with a Santa cap on, which I plan to use :)

How does one make envelopes?

I usually make my cards every year too, and really want to do it this year, but the rest of my life is sooooo crazy and my house is a mess due to remodeling/new roommate, etc. So I feel guilty starting another messy project!

However, it's something I always love doing! Although my roommate's taken over my living room where I like to set up my card table...(and isn't paying rent - another story for another day)

I usually make my own cards with nice paper, and use rubber stamps and embossing powder, then color in the designs.

I'd love to try some new techniques, use embellishments, etc.

I love this time of year!

Yes. Mine are about half finished. I picked a dark green paper for my card this year and need to figure out how to put the message on the inside so that it can be read. Silly me didn't think about that before I started putting them together! Any suggstions would be welcome.

Okay, the reason I do 162...

First, there is family. Mine's not so big, but DH's dad has 4 siblings and his mom has 7 siblings. They all have grown children and some of them have grown children so that makes for quite a few cards. Then, I tend to hang onto friends. I still keep in touch with people from Anderson, SC and we moved away in 1975 (I was in the 4th grade). After that I lived in Lawrenceville, GA through high school and there are people there who I still keep in touch with. And then off to college in Valdosta, GA. Yep, keeping in touch with some of them. After that I went in the Marine Corps. Stationed all over and kept in touch with at least one person from every duty station. So, now we are in Bellevue, NE and I have local friends I also send cards to. Add in a few internet buddies and you get 162. It makes for quite a list. A friend here who says she buys a box of 20 each year and never uses them all was amazed at how many I sent. She has lived here all her life so it's completely different for her.

Are you stamping the inside. You could emboss with gold, silver or white so it would show up. If you are writing a white gel pen shows up well on dark paper. Peggy in NJ
