Heat embossing problem

Hi Ladies,

I have a problem, Ive been trying to expand my techniques and constantly try embossing my images however no matter how hard I try, the powders dont melt. Im using powers from Joanns and my hair dryer which I was told would still work. I dont want to have to buy a heat embosser if its not going to work. Once I stamp my image (using pigment inks) I put on the powder which looks fabulous then I attempt to melt it and thats where the problem lies.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really want to like this technique!

The hair dryer is probably not hot enough. I use the Coloriser and it only takes a couple seconds and it works beautifully. I did read somewhere that someone held the paper over the toaster and it worked but that sounds like a burn waiting to happen.

Yeah, hair dryers don't work that well. I could never get it to work with my hair dryer. I also tried an iron and it didn't work either.

Hair dryer won't get near hot enough. Find a 40% off coupon to Michaels or JoAnns... they don't really cost much to begin with, but the coupon will really make it affordable. I love the look of heat embossing and have SO much fun with my heat embosser. The thing I want is a stand. When I go to Stamp Camps they have the niftiest wooden stands.

I would advise you to get the heat gun..they make a huge difference in the finish product...That being said..When I first started scrapbooking and was trying to build up my supplies with a very limited budget, I used the toaster for embossing! Don't lay the paper on the toaster! It will burn everytime, turn your toaster on..and place the back of the paper very close to the toaster, then slowly move your paper back and forth...The motion will keep it from burning the paper..

Hope this helps! Barb.

If you have a Michael's near by, watch for the 40% discount coupon and here in Canada is was around $40. but with the coupon I only paid about $17. and cents for mine. They are great and melt in seconds! Likely cheaper in U.S.

You really do want a heat gun. A hairdryer delivers warmth with a lot of air movement. You need heat with minimal air movement.

Last time I looked, Michaels had a long blue airgun and a cheaper white one that looked like a little hair dryer. I got the cheaper one, and it works just fine. Remember to keep it moving, and once the powder melts, stop heating that area. Too much causes the powder to flatten back out and (essentially) burn. So practice.

AND -- be sure you've got the right kind of powder. I bought some that simply sat flat on the paper once it melted .. no "puff" at all. That wasn't the look I wanted!

Have fun, Gina

Ashlie,

You can use a toaster (Holding it above the toaster -- Image side facing up) But I did not like that method... I was also told you coulod use a toaster oven, but I was too scared to ever use that method. The toaster gets really hot and you have to be careful not to burn your fingers or the paper. I would watch for sales and get a heat embossing gun. They are worth the money. (You also might ask for one for a gift--- birthday, holiday, etc.)
