O.T. AOL

My mom and dad just got a computer and it's running AOL. I don't have AOL and don't know how to help my mom over the phone. Is there a sample AOL desktop somewhere on the web I can look at? Does anyone here use AOL? My mom can't check her mail because she doesn't know how. She can't browse the internet because she doesn't know how to get there. I am going up to visit my parents the first two weeks of September, but she would like me to help her NOW. ;-) star2fire

eeek. It's been too long for me....it should have big, cartoon like icons to click on to get to the mail. I would think the same with www. Try having her describe what's on the screen to you....

Anyone can access America Online at

It won't be the exact screen your mom is seeing, but close enough where you could walk her through it.

You could always do the free trial that they have. It will get you enough time that she should know the basics, and then you would have an aim screen name so that you can chat with her after you take aol off.

It's been a long time since I personally used AOL. Once my family got broadband, I stopped using it. Yet my mom wanted to keep AOL because she likes a user interface for the Internet. We finally got rid of AOL though and switched to MSN. It doesn't have all those annoying pop ups and it is faster overall. My mom loves it and is so glad we switched. It's also pretty brainless for a newbie, but powerful and very useful for a more proficient Internet user too.

I use aol and find that everything is pretty self explanatory. One suggestion might be to pick up one of those AOL CD's at an office supply store or copy shop. Maybe you can load it for the "free hours" and you'll be able to mirror what she has. OR...try typing

and you should be able to access it from your server. The view will be just slightly different from what she has. HTH Susan - FL

I have no idea. How would I find that out?

Yes, AOL has their own newsgroups on just about any topic. They do have a scrapbooking newsgroup that I read when I have time. ( one of those I don't post to though )

Actually, those are called "message boards", and are open only to AOL folks. These newsgroups are internationally available, and I read them "through" AOL.
