organizing pictures on the computer

I am trying to come up with a better way to organize my pictures on my computer. I have separated them into folders for family, friends, scrapbooking, etc. but when I copy them to CD I can't remember which folders have been changed since the last time so I end up copying each one of them again. If there are new pictures it copies them but it would be nice to have a better system. Anyone have any ideas you can share with me?

Well the best thing I've found to do was to delete those folders when they are burnt off and start again.. and then date each CD according to the dates they were taken.. like I have family photos Jan 2004-2005 and that is seperated by who they are... so If I need a picture of Cody (my nephew) when he was 5 (this year) I know... 2004, family, cody.. voila there it is.... instead of constantly adding... eventually the folders get so full you can't put a whole folder on one cd and this prevents that.... I also keep a seperate cd (since they are cheap) of the origional captures (RAW format, or whatever your camera does) according to the date of download as an archive.... I have the origionals on that cd and they are by the day I took them (I put them in the date folders and sometimes add additional title like currently "Oct 04-Tx trip") One of my folders is just called Floozypalooza.... LOLOL HTH

I organize my photos in directories named for the month and year. Example: this months' file is called October 2004. The photos are named by the day of the month and the number of photos I took on that given day. Example, I took 3 photos on Sunday, October 10th. Those photos would be stores in the October 2004 directory and be named as follows: Oct 10 01, Oct 10 02, Oct

10 03. On the last day of each month, I back up that file. I do small backups during the month but overwrite it each time. The last backup is the final backup. This has worked great for us.

I was trying to do it that way too but ended up not being able to find anything anymore. Now when I take pictures with my digital camera I have a few folders. The lates one being *2004*. Inside that file I have *01/04*,

*02/04* etc., and if there is a special occasion in any month, such as a wedding or birthday, I'll put another subfolder in that month and title it (*Joes Wedding*). I find it's easier for me to find the pictures I want when I know what year they were taken. It's worked for me....... so far.......

Hey Patty - I do much the same as Ronni -

I create a folder on my PC name it Jan-Mar 2004, sub-folders are named for each son, and have sub folders named for each Grandchildren.

I have a Folder for Dick and I and the sub folders are by event.

My Misc folder, has sub folders for My Brothers and their children and grandchildren.

I burn the CD and delete the picture files (leaving the folders) on my PC. I then rename the Top folder Apr-Jun 2004 with the same sub folders. End of June I burn the CD etc.

I also have a separate CD with all my Scrapbook LO's - I figure the Children will have them some day and there will always be a digital copy - I have named my son Shane as keeper of this CD - and is instructed to update as technology changes so it will be a living record in years to come along with our genealogy in Family Tree.

Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for your ideas. I think I can use some of each idea to come up with the method that suits me best. The only thing I am afraid of is deleting the pictures off my PC because I am fearful of the CD not being recorded properly and then having no copies. Silly me!

Just make sure you check the cd before you delete stuff... and remember CD's are NOT forever... so get prints made of your most important ones.... and once a cd becomes scratched up, make a copy of the cd....

With CD storage as well, I ALWAYS make an extra copy of the burnt CD and have the extras stored at a friends house because if there was ever a fire, flood, etc. I would not lose my photos, I could just reprint everything and redo my albums. Whenever I hear about a fire, as stupid as it sound, I always think " that poor family lost everything, even their photos and they can't be replaced" With that thought in mind I decided to "insure" my photos by having a backup elsewhere!
